When to Upgrade the Town Halls?

Date:

Knowing when to Upgrade the Town Hall is very important in Clash of Clans. Higher levels of Town Hall bring new units, structures, heroes, and other perks. These novelties are not only stronger than their lower-level Town Hall counterparts, but they also make the game more enjoyable and fun.

A sense of progression is what keeps players engaged in any game, and Clash of Clans is no different. However, rushing your Town Hall upgrades is not always the best decision. If you are a veteran and you know what you’re doing, rushing won’t harm you because you know what to expect at higher Town Hall levels.

Total noobs and players who were inactive for a while, I assume you are in one of these two categories, have a more difficult time with Town Hall upgrades. Luckily for you, scrubs, this article is packed with super useful information about upgrading the Town Hall, which will surely help you out.

Basic Upgrade Priority Guidelines

The Town Hall is the main building in Clash of Clans, and as such, people often think of it as the primary goal. No, the main goal of this game is not to rush your Town Hall upgrades. That can leave you unprepared and weaker than your opponents.

If you haven’t upgraded your army, Laboratory, and other structures to the maximum, you might be in a world of hurt when you upgrade the Town Hall. You’ll also want to stock up on resources (elixir and gold) so that you can get the new structure and army upgrades when you reach the new Town Hall level.

Being efficient in this game is the most crucial thing, not rushing the Town Hall upgrades. You want to make the most out of your resources, i.e., spend them on other upgrades. Also, you should keep your builders working as much as you can.

Having lazy, sleepy, or idle builders is the worst thing you can do for your game progression. Always keep them busy, as well as your Laboratory. You need to keep your storage buildings, army camps, spells, farm quality troops, among other things.

In addition

If you ever played a strategy game in your life, you know how bad it is to hit a unit or resource cap. Let’s say you have 5.000.000 gold and 1.000.000 elixir, and you launch a successful attack. You are near the resource cap, and you get plenty of both from the bounty. Essentially, you are wasting your resources this way because you failed to manage them correctly.

It is vital to have a healthy amount of resources going into a new Town Hall upgrade but use them consistently to get other upgrades up until you decide to upgrade the TH. There are many hoarders in this game, as they are attracted to shiny things and the sheer amount of them this game has.

If you are like this, then hoard a wide variety of units, upgrades, walls, defensive structures, etc. Don’t pile up gold and elixir because it won’t help you. Why do I say this? I have a friend who is a hoarder, and he plays this game. Don’t be like him; get all the upgrades if you can.

There will be time to hoard stuff when you’ve maxed out your Town Hall level, which is a long way to go. The max level is 13, and that reminds me. The following section explains what you get with every Town Hall update in Clash of Clans, and what should be your priorities at each TH level.

Town Hall Levels 1 to 13 Explained

Why the hell would I explain level 1 Town Hall, when it’s a piece of cake? Well, some newbies tend to start making mistakes from the get-go. You should know that you need to build one of each structure before you can upgrade to Town Hall level 2.

You don’t need to upgrade them or anything, build at least one of each, and then you can progress to the next level of Town Hall. The same goes for every other Town Hall level. You need one of each structure, and of course, the required resources for the upgrade.

Below is a little table to assist you with the Town Hall upgrade requirements and stats. It can be useful even to more experienced players because there is no need to memorize everything, who does that?

Town Hall Stats and Requirements

Town Hall Levels 2 to 7

TH levels up to seven are simple in terms of strategy and times when to upgrade them. Everything is upgrading fast at this level, and you’ll get through the lower levels before you know it. You should upgrade everything to the max on each Town Hall level and then upgrade to the next one.

That includes the Laboratory upgrades, as well as all the other structures available. Of course, you want to upgrade your troops as well. Make sure to improve the walls too, in between other structure upgrades.

You’ll find a lot of discussion about wall upgrades online. Many people say maxing out the walls is a must. I have to disagree. Other structures give more value, especially when you are up against aerial troops. They can fly over the walls and get to your other buildings quickly.

Therefore, I always rank my defensive structures like towers and canons over walls. Of course, if you have idle builders, let them build walls when everything else at the max level. Don’t get me wrong. You shouldn’t ignore wall upgrades completely, that’s also a wrong decision. Find the right balance; it will come to you naturally when you play more.

Town Hall Level 7

On Town Hall level 7, things start to get spicy. The costs go up, and the upgrade times start increasing drastically. Some of the most prominent unlocks are the Barbarian King and Dark units. These units are hog riders and minions.

You need a dark elixir to build them, so you also get a dark elixir storage facility. You also get the Barbarian King Altar, which I recommend building, even if you haven’t leveled the king to level five. The additions might seem confusing and complicated at first, but you’ll get the hang of it.

The most notable upgrades you need before you can progress to TH level 8 are as follows:

  1. Upgrade the spells and troops you’ll be using to the maximum. Spells like Rage and Heal should be your staples, focus on getting them first. These are all Laboratory upgrades.
  2. Get the Barbarian King Altar even before he hits level 5.
  3. Finish upgrading your buildings, all of them.

That’s it. You don’t need to upgrade the Dark units to the maximum if you can’t find enough Dark Elixir.

Town Hall Level 8

If you thought level 7 Town Hall was impressive, you should see what level 8 brings. There will be five more Dark Spell, as well as Barbarian King levels. The strategies you used at the TH 7 will still be decent.

Dark elixir will be simpler to come by thanks to better loot, as well as the other dark elixir Drill. That’s good news because you can remedy the lack of full upgrade to the Barbarian King and Dark units in the previous Town Hall level.

At this stage, you will have more elixir than you need, but you need to keep farming for the final upgrades because you’ll be missing gold and dark elixir. Farming these two should be your priority. Here’s a quick list of improvements you need on this level:

  1. Get as many Lab upgrades as you can, both for your spells and your troops. Hog Rider upgrade should be a priority, alongside Valkyrie upgrades. Finally, upgrade the Barbarians because your Barbarian King spawns them.
  2. Speaking of his majesty, this is when you should get him to level 10.
  3. Keep upgrading all your buildings to the max, including your walls, if you can.

Save a healthy amount of elixir for Town Hall level 9; oh boy, you’ll need it. Get as many upgrades that require a lot of gold on this level.

Town Hall Level 9

Town Hall level 9 is exciting, and of my personal favorites. That’s where you get your second hero, the Archer Queen. You also get to upgrade both of them to level 30! These upgrades are insane, but you’ll need tons of resources. And I mean tons.

Keep farming dark elixir as much as you can. Besides the new hero, you can also make many new troops at this TH level. Here are the key things you should focus on:

  1. Upgrade everything you use (spells, units) in the Lab. If you can, upgrade it to max level. The Healer upgrade is an important one; you don’t want to miss that. Healers are incredibly valuable because you can use them with the Queen Walk. Everyone is using this strategy at level 9 and beyond because it is so powerful. Also, upgrade the Archers and Barbarians, your hero spawned units.
  2. Try to upgrade your heroes as much as you can, preferably to level 25. If you get them to 30, that’s even better.
  3. Keep upgrading your walls and max out other building upgrades. Walls can stay at one level below maximum. Enhancing those increases their durability, and this helps significantly against ground attacks.

A final piece of advice is to commit to the Queen Walk strategy and try to perfect it. It’s a strong strategy, so maybe I might soon write a beginner guide on it. Don’t get your hopes up. I said I might do it.

Town Hall Level 10

Town Hall level 10 is not as exciting as TH 9 in my book. It is still pretty fun, with the added hero levels and new units, such as Bowlers and Miners. You can use the same Dark Elixir tactics, but consider throwing some Miners into the mix to stir things up. Both of these new units are very strong. Follow these guidelines for TH 10 upgrades:

  1. As always, keep getting the max-level Laboratory upgrades. Prioritize the units and spells that are useful to you. If you like aerial attacks, max out the Haste spell. You should also upgrade the Bowlers, Miners, and Valkyries since they are quite powerful in late game builds.
  2. Keep buffing your heroes. Get them to level 40 if you can.
  3. Upgrade every structure. Make sure that even your walls are level 11.

When you notice that you are pillaging more resources than you can use, it is time to upgrade to the next level. That’s general advice, but it is especially applicable at level 10 TH.

Town Hall Level 11

Here’s another neat Town Hall level. You guessed it well – there’s another hero unlock. His name is the Grand Warden, and interestingly enough, he doesn’t require dark elixir for upgrades. His upgrades use the regular variety, which is excellent news. That allows you to save dark elixir for your queen and king. Here are the upgrade guidelines:

  1. Lab upgrades to the maximum again? You’re smart, aren’t you? Of course, you need to do that! No need to boost the units you’re not using, though.
  2. Upgrade your heroes to the max, all of them. Primarily, your Grand Warden. He has a neat aura effect that increases the hit points of your units. Get him to level 5, and the king and queen to level 45, if not higher.
  3. Last but not least, upgrade as many structures as possible. Make sure to prioritize your defenses, e.g., Inferno Tower, X-Bow, Eagle Artillery. Also, level up the Clan Castle and Army Camp as much as you can. Wall upgrades can wait.

Town Hall Level 12

Congrats, if you reached Town Hall level 12, you’ve come a long way. This upgrade brings the Siege Machine. You maybe got it from your clan earlier because these can be gifted. The Giga Tesla upgrade also comes here. Its level 5 is a force to be reckoned with, and you need to upgrade it for TH 13 anyway.

The heroes also get more levels. They will become nearly unstoppable, especially the Grand Warden. His aura becomes insane at level 40 as it goes up to a 90% health point boost! Here are the upgrades you should keep in mind:

  1. Straight up, upgrade the Giga Tesla to the max. It gives you value on its own, but also allows the TH 13 progression.
  2. Upgrade the spells and troops in the Lab. I’d suggest maxing out Bowlers, Ice Golems, Balloons, Witches, and P.E.K.K.As. You can keep using the TH 11 setup if you like, it’s still decent.
  3. Prioritize Grand Warden upgrades, because he’ll increase the value of your units a lot. Keep upgrading the King and the Queen.
  4. Upgrade as many structures as you can. Prioritize the Workshop if you want to donate Siege Machines to other clan members.
  5. Prioritize defensive structures in particular. Inferno Towers, X-Bows, and Eagle Artillery will save your bacon at this stage of the game.

Town Hall Level 13

Town Hall, level 13, is a story of its own. I could talk about it for days, but I’ll try to keep things short and simple here so that you can follow. The much-expected winter update brought the TH 13 upgrade in December 2019. It sparked the interest of veteran and returning players, some of which only returned because this update caught their eye.

It’s the most significant change the game had in a while and the most impactful one. A new Town Hall level means an array of new units and buildings. Supercell didn’t disappoint, I can tell you that much. They released a new Hero and many cool buildings.

The new theme is also pretty dandy with its dark ice vibe. When you upgrade to TH 13, your buildings get the black and blue outline. Upgrading to this stage is easier said than done; it takes a lot of time and gold.

If you managed that, you’re not a scrub anymore. You are a little cheater, aren’t you? Why don’t you share your cheats with us in the comments? OK, now seriously, let’s take a look at all the brand new additions:

  1. The Giga Inferno – Now, this is probably the coolest thing ever added to Clash of Clans. It is similar to the multi-targeting Inferno Tower, but it’s even more impressive. The Giga Inferno is part of the TH 13, and it activates after the TH loses half its health. When the Giga Inferno is destroyed, it releases a Haze of Ice, which slows attack and movement speeds of all enemies. They are not frozen, though.
  2. The Scattershot – The Scattershot is another new defensive structure. Unlike the Giga Inferno, it is a separate building. It is like a defensive Bowler. It does massive splash damage and has a large health pool. You have two of these maximum, and obviously, you should get them as soon as possible. The Scattershot can target both ground and air units.
  3. The Siege Barracks –This is a new Workshop level 4 upgrade. The machine spawns troops, including wizards and a P.E.K.K.A. You can only land it outside the enemy walls. When the Siege Barrack gets destroyed, it spawns Clan Castle units.
  4. The Yeti is a tank, and it can take a lot of beating. Upon damaging the Yeti, he spawns up to 10 Yetimites, which explode upon impact. They also jump over walls, which makes them a precious unit.
  5. The Royal Champion – That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, we have a new hero. She can also jump walls and auto-lock on other defenses. She has massive four-target damage ability, which is when she throws her shield. She can attack single targets with her spear.

There are some quality-of-life changes as well with the new update. Your heroes will now automatically use their ability when they are to suffer lethal damage. You can disable this option in More Settings if you prefer activating the ability manually as you did before.

The Laboratory and the Army Camps now take up slightly less space than they used to. There are also new clan recruitment features. Overall, these changes aim to help players find clans and clan members.

There were also some visual and balance changes with this update. Also, Supercell added many units, hero, structure, defense, spell, and trap levels.

Town Hall Tips and Tricks

Now you have all the necessary details to understand the importance of Town Hall upgrades. Let’s discuss some general tips and tricks revolving around them. You know by now that defending the Town Hall should be your priority.

It is the main building in the game, and its destruction often means the difference between winning and losing. In a Builder Base, the Town Hall’s equivalent is the Builder Hall.

Your Town Hall holds 20% of all your resources (gold, elixir, and dark elixir). When you lose your Town Hall in a battle, you lose one star instantly. If they fail to destroy your Town Hall, they can only get one star in total, which is neat for you.

At higher levels, however, some players disregard the importance of the Town Hall. They use it as a dummy target for the enemy. They want to deny the enemy a three-star win, but allow them to have an easy two-star one. Storages are better damage sponges, in my opinion, but sometimes the TH can serve this purpose too.

Rushing your Town Hall upgrades is terrible most of the time. Experienced players can do this if they think it is a good idea. If you are new, prioritize getting all the necessary upgrades first. You can’t attack successfully with a low-level army or heroes.

Mind the positioning of your Town Hall. As a ground rule, try to place it in the center of your base. Placing the Town Hall in a corner is the worst thing you can do because the enemy can then easily approach it, even if you have walls. If they attack via air, you are doomed.

I know I told you that you need to build all the buildings before you can upgrade your Town Halls to the next level. However, there are a few exceptions. One of them is the Clan Castle. It doesn’t need rebuilding.

The other ones are the Builder’s and Master Builder’s Huts. You don’t need to have a maximum amount of builders to upgrade the Town Hall, but I still advise it.

Visual Changes of the Town Hall

Finally, nearly every upgrade of the Town Hall brings significant cosmetic changes. You should probably look them up online, but here is a brief explanation of the changes for each TH level:

  1. The level one Town Hall is simple and also crooked. It is a wooden building, and it has an orange roof and a chimney.
  2. The level two Town Hall has tiles on the roof. The walls are stone, and the crooked parts are straight.
  3. The level three Town Hall gets another layer of tiles on the roof.
  4. The level four Town Hall gets another tile, and the chimney assumes a left forward position.
  5. The level five Town Hall gets a stone framing for the windows and doors.
  6. The level six Town Hall has golden pillars on its sides.
  7. The level seven Town Hall gets arrow slits and a battlement on the roof.
  8. The level eight Town Hall expands the pillars and the battlement. The chimney and the smoke from it are gone.
  9. The level nine Town Hall becomes gray and gets a red flag at its top. The doors receive a skull.
  10. The level ten Town Hall becomes gray and crimson. This level adds another watchtower, and molten lava is spilling next to them.
  11. The level eleven Town Hall is stone. The doors are golden, and the roof has a hole with lava. There’s also a red flag.
  12. The level twelve Town Hall is blue. The inside is lit up.
  13. The level thirteen Town Hall is light blue, with dark edges.

Upgrade, Evolve, Conquer

Clash of Clans is like real life. You have to keep improving every day if you want to succeed. Knowing when to upgrade the Town Hall isn’t simple, but this guide will surely help you get a clearer picture. You will develop your preferences and playstyle as you play, which you should always take into account when making any drastic changes such as upgrading the TH.

Always upgrade your units, heroes, and other buildings first, and only when you are ready and confident, upgrade the Town Hall. Don’t be a scrub. If you are, stop being one. Also, always keep an eye on your resources and try to manage them to the best of your power. Good luck, rooks. See you on the battlefield.
