Recap of Day 2: YGG Web3 Games Summit Conference | BitPinas

The first day of the YGG Web3 Games Summit (W3GS) has been loaded with key players in the industry, respected KOLs (Key Opinion Leaders) in the community, and communicative regulators in the country. 

For the second day of the conference, more key players in the industry have shared their wisdom about web3 gaming, NFTs, and the complexity of the metaverse.

WHEN NFTS OWN NFTS: 6551 AND A FUTURE OF GAMING PARADIGM

“When NFTs Own NFTs: 6551 and a Future of Gaming Paradigm” is a fireside chat with Spacebar Co-Founder Christy Choi, moderated by OP Games CEO Chase Freo. 

During the conversation, Choi shared how she got onboarded with using ERC-6551. ERC-6551 enables Token Bound Accounts, which means that NFTs can have their own NFT wallets integrated. 

“With 6551, it essentially becomes its own wallet. Any of your NFTs, whether it is used in gaming or in fashion, could now have multitudes of applications around it. The thought of owning an NFT that owns other NFTs underneath it simplifies a lot of things in the process,” Freo explained.

THE FUTURE OF AXIE INFINITY IN THE PHILIPPINES

Talking in front of the community where Axie Infinity arose during the 2021 bull market, Sky Mavis Co-Founder Jeffrey “Jihoz” Zirlin discussed the future of Axie Infinity in the Philippines.

“Ronin is back. The Philippines is back. And it is clear that as we enter a new cycle, the Philippines will remain as the beating heart of web3 gaming.”

THE BULL, THE BEAR, AND BUILDING THE KING OF GAMING CHAINS

“The Bull, The Bear, and Building The King of Gaming Chains” is a fireside chat with Sky Mavis Co-Founder Jeffrey “Jihoz” Zirling and Emfarsis Director Leah Callon-Butler. 

In this chat, Jihoz discussed how Axie Infinity, a Pokemon-inspired blockchain game, became a giant in the gaming industry. 

“People think that it is hard to believe that it is hard to believe for a web3 game to reach that kind of adoption, but it did,” Callon-Butler highlighted.

BUILDING TOWARDS A WEB3 GAME LAUNCH

“Building Towards A Web3 Game Launch” is a panel discussion with Anito Legends Co-Founder Jayvee Fernandez, Brilliantcrypto Business Development Chief Hugo Church, and Epic League Business Executive Sinhae Lee.

During the discussion moderated by BitPinas Editor-in-Chief Michael Mislos, the three developers shared their experiences in developing their own web3 games, expressed how community is important in launching a game, and gave advice to those who want to build a web3 game. 

“When you’re exploring web3, you are not really sure about adoption. So in that case, it is really about building case studies to show to brands, so they can explore, ‘Hey maybe what’s something here?’” Fernandez ended.

BATTLE OF THE GAMING BLOCKCHAINS

“Battle of the Gaming Blockchains” is a panel discussion with Ronin Business Development Manager Ash Kamal, Aptos Foundation APAC Ecosystem Lead Jerome Ong, and Polygon Labs APAC Head Marouen Zelleg. 

Moderated by Coins.ph Global Marketing Director Kat Gonzales, the discussion circled around the advantages and disadvantages of different blockchains that web3 game developers should consider. 

“I guess the web3 part is something that can be intimidating for builders, those especially who are migrating from web2 to web3,” Gonzales commented.

“Creating Experiences For Your Community In The Metaverse” is a panel discussion with Metasports CEO and Co-Founder Joe Josue, ZTX Head of Community Karma Gora, and Planet Tota Brand Director Brittany Li.

The discussion, which was moderated by APAC DAO Co-Founder Nicole Nguyen, focused on the key ingredients to build a good community within the web3 gaming realm. 

“When it comes to web3 gaming, I am very excited because web3 and blockchain technology were able to bring the ultimate fun engagement to everyone else,” Li emphasized.

MAXIMIZING THE FOUNDER-INVESTOR RELATIONSHIP

“Maximizing The Founder-Investor Relationship” is a panel discussion with LongHash Ventures Co-Founder Wei Shi Khai, DWF Labs Partner Eugene Ng, and Newman Capital Partner Anthony Cheng. 

Moderated by Blockceler8 Client Services Director June Olivar, the discussion emphasized the efforts that project founders and developers should make to attract investors. 

“I think as the relationship and time grow, the most important thing as an investor is to identify their blind spot, because not all founders are built to go through all that stage and they really need to have a strong mentor to pass through that,” Cheng insisted.

UNITING CREATORS, BRANDS, AND GAMERS

“Uniting Creators, Brands, And Gamers” is a fireside chat between The Sandbox Co-Founder Sebastien Borget ang Planet Tota Brand Director Brittany Li. 

The chat gave Borget the opportunity to share his experience on how to onboard traditional brands and creators into the web3 space. He also noted how beautiful the market in Asia is due to the region’s openness to accepting innovations”

“Asian countries are markets that really understand web3, blockchain, and user-related content and how they can engage into it and leverage it, not only from the brand perspective but also from the creators’ and player’s perspectives.”

TURNAROUND KINGS: BUYING A PROJECT YOU LOVE TO GIVE IT A NEW LEASE ON LIFE

“Turnaround Kings: Buying A Project You Love To Give It A New Lease On Life” is a fireside chat between Pixelmon CEO Guilio Xiloyannis and Coins.ph CEO Wei Zhou. 

Xiloyannis and Zhou collectively stressed the roles they had in acquiring known NFT projects, the things they did to revive these projects, and their future plans. 

“When that community stayed together through thick and thin and had true invested feelings and emotions, that is what you are looking for,” Xiloyannis noted.

MODDING AND UGC: COMMUNITY-BASED GAME DEVELOPMENT

“Modding and UGC: Community-Based Game Development” is a panel discussion with Spacebar Co-Founder Christy Choi, BreederDAO CEO Renz Chong, and ParagonsDAO Foundation CEO DeFi Ted. 

Moderated by AMG Dao Co-Founder Mark Engelhardt, the discussion focused on their experiences on how web3 gamers create an ecosystem for the community. Collectively, they promoted having user-generated content to attract a stronger community. 

“The biggest thing that UGC has to offer to players is the fact that you can participate in a game that you love and be able to deliver something that you created yourself and be part of it,” said Chong.

BUILDING WORLDS AND BUILDING ECONOMIES IN WEB3

“Building Worlds and Building Economies in Web3” is a panel discussion with Star Atlas CEO Michael Wagner and Cryptopia CEO Sangho Grolleman. 

The discussion, moderated by YGG Campaign Director John Sedano, circled around their experiences building metaverse-themed games, and their tips on how to build a game that the player wants while balancing from the volatility of the market. 

“What is important for us is what people want to be in that world. And for me, there is a fair exchange of value, and if there is a fair exchange of value in your game, people will come and stay,” Grolleman noted. 

LEVERAGING EXTERNAL SERVICES TO SCALE WITH YOUR GAME

“Leveraging External Services to Scale With Your Game” is a panel discussion between Globe Group Product Innovation Head Eprom Galang, Blockdaemon APAC General Manager Andrew Vranjes, and Tashi Protocol CEO Sandeep Bhatia. 

The three speakers shared how the firms they are connected to have overcome challenges in adopting web3. They then gave advice on the steps each builder should do to solve company trials by using external services. 

“I think the important aspect in what can you envision, imagine web3 gaming but not having a MetaMask or a third party wallet—that’s actually a huge barrier to start with,” Galang said. 

BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL ESPORTS PROGRAM FOR MASS ADOPTION

“Building A Successful Esports Program For Mass Adoption” is a panel discussion with Axie Infinity Philippines Head Nix Eniego, Parallel Co-Founder Kohji Nagata, and Mighty Bear Games Design Manager Abel Tan. 

Moderated by NYXL Co-Founder Rohit Gupta, the speakers expressed the importance of esports tournaments in promoting web3 games. 

“I think that’s the beauty of esports in web3 gaming, it is for everyone. Of couse you need some level of skill and commitment, but it is not an environment that gatekeeps opportunities,” Eniego noted. 

DESIGNING AND DEVELOPING REAL-TIME SKILL-BASED GAMES

“Designing And Developing Realtime Skill-Based Games” is a panel discussion with Riftstorm by Mythic Protocol CEO Arief Widhiyasa, Meta-X CCO Keiichi Yano, and MixMob Executive Producer Pavel Bains. 

The speakers talk about the importance of having good gameplay for web3 games, offering players not just earning money, but even good game experience.

“The beauty of entertainment is intangible. That emotional value is way more valuable,” Widhiyasa emphasized. 

IDENTITY AND USER ACQUISITION IN THE WORLD OF WEB3

“Identity And User Acquisition In The World Of Web3” is a panel discussion with Linea Head of International Expansion Laura Shi, YGG Co-Founder Gabby Dizon, and PolygonID Technical Sales Lead Mehdi A. 

Moderated by Clique Co-Founder Jaden Rafael Yan, the discussion revolved around the importance of community privacy of the community. The fact that identity can power user acquisition was also tackled. 

“We should give back the data the users owned to them and let them manage it themselves, and not let the centralized databases do that for them,” Mehdi explained. 

MAXIMIZE THE VALUE OF CREATOR CONTENT TO DRIVE ADOPTION

“Maximize The Value Of Creator Content To Drive Adoption” is a panel discussion between YGG Pilipinas Talet Development Lead Een Mercado, Web3 Gaming KOL Yellow Panther, and Daredevil Media Founder Jared Dillinger. 

In this discussion, moderated by Investor Mike Abundo, producing web3-focused content to attract more crypto natives and onboard more people in the industry is one of the key players in driving adoption in the country. 

“Most of my audience are young people. So educating them is very important about having their own assets, especially online. So when I tell them that it is a web3 game, it is clearly making them realize that this is more than just a game, it prepares them for their future,” Mercado shared.

THE INTERSECTION OF WEB3 AND ESPORTS

“The intersection of Web3 and Esports” is a panel discussion with NYXL Co-Founder Rohit Gupta, Tier One Entertainment CEO Tryke Gutierrez, Mineski Global Regional VP for Marketing Jamie Paraso. 

Moderated by YGG Head of Esports Mike Ovecka, the speakers shared how they envision blockchain technology to influence and upgrade esports tournaments and being pro players. 

“I think what web3 really brings is the advancement of technologies. This new technology can really open up new things. What NFT brings to the table is in terms of fun experiences,” Gutierrez expressed.

2048 WAYS TO SCALE YOUR GAME INTO THE MILLIONS

“2048 Ways to Scale Your Game into the Millions” is a fireside chat between ED3N Ventures Chief of Staff Sam Cruz and Superfine Co-Founder Chris Calderon. 

In this chat, Calderon shared his journey as an investment banker and now owning a firm that focuses on user acquisition. He also shared some tips for producing the “best” web3 games, including forming a stellar team: 

“Getting your game out there, testing it as quickly as possible, and trying to fail as quickly as possible is very helpful,” Calderon noted.
