Bitcoin:

  • Antoine Riard posted to the Bitcoin-Dev mailing list and Lightning-Dev mailing lists about a responsibility disclosure affecting all Lightning Network implementations.

Ethereum:

  • Christine Kim from Galaxy highlights the latest All Core Devs Call for Ethereum and the launch of devnet 11, a shadow fork for Goerli next week, the likely activation of Dencun being pushed back to 2024 and more!
  • Vitalik Buterin published an article on the Different Types of Layer 2s, explaining the complicated differences between Rollups, Validiums, and Disconnected Systems.
  • Ethereum Foundation researchers publish a paper on expanding the family of dynamically available consensus protocols. More and more developers are still actively working on various consensus protocols for Ethereum.
  • Terence Tsao of Prysmatic Labs shares a new spec on inclusion lists and the choices in dedicated gas limits. Inclusion lists lend into censorship on Ethereum.
  • Péter Szilágyi of Ethereum Foundation posts that Nethermind and Besu apparently stopped storing historical Ethereum data and are trying to standardize that, thus violating protocols.

Other Chains: 

  • On October 17th, 2023 Scroll announced that Scroll Mainnet is officially live! Scroll is an EVM compatible zk-Rollup.
  • Arbitrum Orbit is now mainnet ready! Users can now permissionlessly build a customized chain using the most advanced scaling technology.
  • Polygon’s PIP-29 is now live, which is the proposal to create the Polygon Protocol Council. This council will define the upgradability and community-led governance of the protocol moving forward.
  • MigaLabs shares a new monitoring tool to visualize and inspect both Ethereum Beacon nodes and validators across the network.
  • Chainchat by Zapper is introduced which provides channel and earning capabilities directly within their application. This is similar to XMTP which is built into Coinbase Wallet.
  • The inaugural Layer-2 coordination call, aka RollCall, took place on October 18th, 2023. The idea behind this is to supercharge layer-2 innovation by providing a neutral platform for rollups to coordinate on standards.
  • Rated Network provides a new dashboard of Ethereum validator slashes and related statistics.
  • Superchain Eco is introduced to help accelerate the adoption and development of the OP Stack.
  • Swell Network which focuses on Liquid Staking tokens for Ethereum, shares what’s on the horizon for their development. This includes upcoming expansion of their LST DeFi ecosystem, liquid re-staking primitives, and further research.
  • Aave chooses via a Governance Proposal to go with RocketPool’s rETH instead of Lido for 100% allocation.
  • CoW Swap announced gasless approval of tokens and full trading practices being fully gasless!
  • Masha Moosavi of OffChain Labs shares an article on Fast and Furious Withdrawals from Optimistic Rollups.

Hacks | Vulnerabilities | Exploits:

  • The SIT (Special Investigation Team) in India started probing an alleged cryptocurrency scam via searches at 41 locations in Himachal Pradesh.
  • Fireblocks researchers uncover the first Account Abstraction wallet vulnerability.
  • Over the past few months, Samczsun and others have been conducting simulated attacks internally with protocols such as Compound and Yearn to better prepare them for when the time comes. Read the full thread here.
  • On November 1st, 2023, Onyx Protocol was exploited for ~$2.1M on Ethereum. The exploiter issued the same style of attack that previously was used against Hundred Finance. The funds are now moving through Tornado Cash.

Mainstream Recap:

  • The long awaited conclusory statement from UK HMT on its crypto asset regulatory regime has been posted.
  • New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a sweeping lawsuit against cryptocurrency companies Gemini Trust Company, Genesis Global Capital, LLC and its affiliates Genesis and Digital Currency Group for defrauding more than 230,000 investors of more than $1B.
  • ZKP2P provides a demo of a 90 second transaction that utilizes Venmo to send funds from USD to USDC on Ethereum.
  • Unchained showcases some new CoinShares data that illustrates how inflows have hit the highest weekly level since June 2022, driven by the spot Bitcoin ETF optimism.
  • Token Terminal highlights the trending smart contracts over the past 30-days for the amount of gas used. The new leader is the USDT contract on Tron!
  • Brian Armstrong of Coinbase shares that they are working hard to improve both cost and time to confirm payments within Coinbase Wallet. Their goal is to get the average transaction time under 1 second end-to-end. To do this, they will possibly require layer-2 payments by default.
  • Connext Network announces a unified call for Open Bridge Standards. They are calling together developers from Across, Celer, LiFi, and more.
  • Coinbase announces that it has chosen Ireland as its EU MiCA hub, in what marks an important chapter in their international expansion.
  • On October 23rd, 2023, the iShares Bitcoin Trust was listed on the DTCC (Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, which clears NASDAQ trades). This is all in process for the ETF.
  • SEC acknowledges Grayscale’s spot Ether ETF filing. This would allow the conversion of existing Ether product into an ETF.
  • Coinbase’s Layer-2, Base, announces Base Grants, which will help push those early ideas and initial prototypes on Base.
  • Mastercard and MoonPay announce that they are teaming up to drive innovation and strengthen consumer connections via Mastercard’s Crypto Credential, Mastercard Send, and Click to Pay.
  • Elliptic wants to set the record straight on crypto crowdfunding via Hamas.
