Samsung has created an internal “Immersive Team” dedicated to developing the company’s first extended reality (XR) headset, according to a report from Korean outlet Hankyung.
The team, which operates under Samsung’s Mobile Experience (MX) division, recently grew from a small group to over 100 people as Samsung aims to accelerate development and launch the headset this year.
The hurried pace comes in response to the launch of Apple’s Vision Pro headset last month, which sold over 200,000 units globally. Samsung hopes to unveil its headset in the second half of 2024 alongside the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 phones, rather than fall behind its main competitor in the emerging spatial computing market.
The Immersive Team consists of experts recruited from various Samsung departments. The device will likely feature two 1.03-inch OLEDoS microdisplays from Samsung-owned eMagin, providing 3,500 ppi pixel density. The device is also set to utilise Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor to drive high-resolution graphics up to 90 fps.
The headset’s operating system is rumoured to be a customised version of Android made by Google specifically for mixed reality. It could offer full-colour passthrough video along with powerful AI processing, Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, and seamless integration with Samsung’s ecosystem of phones, tablets, and laptops.
While details remain scarce, Samsung aims to significantly undercut the price tag of Apple’s headset.
The launch of its first XR headset this year would position Samsung among the spatial computing leaders, a space which some believe will eventually replace many smartphone and PC/Mac functions.
