New Ways to Reach Your Learners

Ready to reach more learners? Announcing QM’s latest virtual workshop — Applying Universal Design for Learning.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a popular model for designing materials and instructional methods that are usable by a wide range of learners. With this new workshop, you’ll learn to leverage its concepts, working with peers and generative AI to provide UDL suggestions. You’ll gain strategies for anticipating learning variability and implement strategies that provide multiple means of action and expression, engagement and representation.

“I was interested in learning new ways to aid my online students…the workshop provided tools to implement for my classes next semester.”
— Recent UDL workshop participant

Sign up for upcoming sessions on June 7July 26 or Aug. 9 and expand your knowledge of accessibility using the UDL framework!

A Member’s Early Efforts Pay Off

One new QM member hit the ground running with investment in their faculty’s understanding of quality practices — and is already seeing the results.

Oglala Lakota College (OLC) has invested heavily in QM professional development in its first two years as a QM member institution. The outcomes are clear: improved understanding and a shared knowledge base among faculty, and increased satisfaction among learners. We spoke to OLC about the institution’s journey with QM implementation, the success it’s seen over the last two years, and its plans for the future.

  • Guide to Digital Accessibility – Written and edited by members of the QM Community, this guide provides examples of successful accessibility implementation and compiles the experiences of the authors and their teams at a wide variety of higher education institutions.
  • Accessibility & Usability Resource Site – If you’re interested in obtaining new insights into accessibility, check out this special resource created by the QM community that houses a wealth of valuable educator-driven information you can put into practice today.
  • Transformative Conversations – Transformative Conversations is a series that explores how higher education is impacted by and responding to the pandemic and social justice issues initiated in 2020. Guide to Digital Accessibility editors Rae Mancilla and Barbara Frey appeared in the March edition to give a primer on digital accessibility and how the institutional mindset toward it is changing.
  • Future Trends Forum – This monthly web discussion asks the question “What will education look like in the future?” Watch this episode with Drs. Frey and Mancilla to explore insights into what’s to come for online accessibility as the footprint of digital education continues to grow.

Academic Support for AI Tool Use
Quick Tip
You’ve made the decision to use AI tools in your course — but which ones are you using, and which ones are your learners using? It’s important to be intentional about the tools you and your learners employ in the learning process.

One element to consider is campus support: does your institution provide adequate resources for your learners to help learners with the AI tools you’ve chosen?

Try getting in contact with the institution’s Help Desk staff to help them understand your plan for your learners and what AI tools you’ll be using. Academic support services such as tutoring may also benefit from understanding the use of AI in your course and how they might support learners in using Generative AI tools to support their learning.
