January 12, 2024

Greetings, everyone!

We have included some registration tips for you! Registration for both Early and Standard Start spring classes is open through January 30. See the Registration Tips section below.

Our fall Standard Start classes are now complete. Grades will be posted on January 18. Our spring Early Start classes are underway. Standard Start classes begin on January 17.

See the close-out details for fall and start-up details for spring in This Week at NCVPS below.

Please forward this e-lert to any stakeholders who may need it. They can subscribe to the e-lert here.

Registration Tips

Here are a few helpful tips as you register:

  • Make sure you’re enrolling in the correct semester. We have summer, fall, spring, yearlong, early standard, and standard start options.
  • Be sure to add the IEP modifications as you enroll students with IEPs.
  • Use the search feature in our registration system to find the courses you are looking for. Similar to PowerSchool, Math is 1-4. World Languages and English are I-IV. Our OCS courses have “blended” in the course title, and our co-taught intervention courses have “co-teaching” in the course title.
  • Download an enrollment report when you’re done registering for the day. Check to see if they’re enrolled or waitlisted.
  • Understand our waitlist. Our instructional directors use the waitlist to determine if they need to open a new section of the course or increase the capacity of an already opened section.
  • We will likely have a few courses end up on our course capacity list. Popular demand and teacher limitations drive this list. Students waitlisted for those courses may have a difficult time getting a seat in the course.
  • Download an enrollment report each day that you register to keep up to date on enrollment status.
  • Students will be able to access their courses on the first day of NCVPS classes. Check our calendar for Early and Standard Start Dates. They have easy access through NCEdCloud with their Rapid Identify accounts. If you are at a school where students do not use NCEdCloud, you can access their usernames and passwords in an enrollment report. NCVPS does not send usernames and passwords to students. If your students are logging in directly to Canvas, be sure they are using the NCVPS Canvas link.

This Week at NCVPS

Fall Block Classes

Fall Early Start classes ended in December, and fall Standard Start classes ended on January 10. See our End of Semester Reminders for all the details on closing out fall classes.

Spring Semester Enrollment

Registration is still open for Spring 2024. The last day to register for both Early Start and Standard Start classes is January 30, 2024. As our Standard Start fall classes come to a close, let’s start our preparations for Spring 2024.

Funding for Spring 2024

If your district or charter school has exhausted its state allotment for NCVPS registration, you may apply to use NCVPS reserve funds or use local monies with our flexible funding option. What’s the difference between the two? Let’s take a look.

NCVPS Reserve Funds

It does not cost your district or charter school to use NCVPS reserve funds. This is a great option for schools that have exhausted their allotted funds. Your enrollments will still count in your allotment totals, and you may see your allotment go up a bit next year. As part of its allotment formula, DPI uses a four-year average of enrollments to determine your allotment projection each year.

Flexible Funding Option

Districts and charter schools may use other funds to pay for NCVPS enrollments. Districts may use local funds, federal funds, special state reserve for children and youth with disabilities, and ADM contingency reserve. Enrollments made with these funds will not be counted toward next year’s projected enrollments.

Click on the links above to begin the process. The requests must come from a district supervisor or charter principal.

Contact Information

Let’s make sure your school’s primary contact information is up-to-date in our registration system. If you’re new to NCVPS, we call this role the e-learning advisor, or ELA.

School ELAs should make sure their contact information in the NCVPS registration system is correct. If you are no longer serving in the ELA role, please have the new ELA update the contact page in our registration system. Our teachers will need school contact information right away. See our Updating ELA Contact Information guide for help.

Connecting with Parents

As virtual learning has become a part of everyday learning for most families across North Carolina, many parents, guardians, and mentors continue to struggle with how to support their online learners in blended and online classes. To provide resources and strategies for how to support not only our NCVPS students, but all online learners in North Carolina, NCVPS has created two Supporting Online Students (SOS) video courses in Canvas. Both courses are free, open to the public, and do not require login credentials. Please share both links with your educational communities and parent networks.
 Supporting Students – All NC
The first course, Supporting Online Students – All NC, is general in nature and is designed for parents, guardians, and mentors of any student who is participating in a blended or online course or is enrolled in a fully online program regardless of school or grade level.
Supporting Students – NCVPS
The second course, Supporting Online Students – NCVPS, is specific to NCVPS and includes specific examples, demonstrations, and resources for NC Virtual parents, guardians, and mentors.

NCVPS has a mobile app, and Canvas has two mobile apps and a web portal. What does each one do? We’re glad you asked! Here you go:

NCVPS App: Stay connected with what’s happening at NCVPS. Think of these as “front office” notifications.

Canvas Apps and Web Portal: Connect with a student’s course, see grades, due dates, pacing guides, and message the teacher.

Check out the guide on our Mobile Apps page to see when and where it’s best to use each app or portal.
