As mentioned before, this connection error code is the most common error code that DbD players face. This error code occurs when the game cannot connect to the online services and that prevents the game from starting up. Hence, here are some of the most common causes that are responsible for players facing the Dead by Daylight error code 8012:

Internet Connectivity Problems

Of course, the most common cause for getting the Dead by Daylight error code 8012 is having internet connection issues. It might be that your internet disconnected and you weren’t aware of it or your connection is malfunctioning due to server instability.

Network Congestion

Another cause for encountering the connection error in the game is network inconsistencies which are caused by network congestion. This can occur when your device is taking too much load or just simply glitching out.

Dead by Daylight Servers Being Down

It is not uncommon for game servers to be down for maintenance, patch fixes or vice versa. If the DbD game servers are down, you will face this connection error code for an indefinite period of time. Check DownDetector and see if the DbD servers are down and if they are, the only thing you can do in this case is wait for them to get back up.

Corrupted Easy Anti-Cheat Software

Any and every game uses Easy Anti-Cheat Software (EAC) to prevent their game from being infested with hackers or cheaters who ruin the gameplay for others. Sometimes this EAC software malfunctions and all of its files become corrupted which can cause the connection error code to show up in Dead by Daylight.

Conflicting VPN Settings

It might be likely that the VPN software you’re using is preventing DbD from loading up. This might happen because of an unsupported region or conflicting settings that you’re using in your VPN software.

Using a Proxy Server

Just like VPN software, using a proxy server can also cause the connection error code in DbD. A proxy server can cause issues with the server authentication module which in turn can stop DbD from starting up.

Corrupted DNS Cache

As we all know, the temporary data that our device receives to enhance user experience is accumulated over time. This is known as DNS cache and just like every other type of file, it can also become corrupted. A corrupted DNS cache can be one of the reasons why you’re facing the Dead by Daylight error code 8012 as it is preventing the game from starting up.

Ways to fix the Dead by Daylight Error Code 8012

Now that you know what causes the error code to occur, it is time to know how to fix the error code. Hence, here are some ways on how to fix the Dead by Daylight error code 8012:

Check your Internet Connection

One of the main reasons why you may be getting the error code 8012 is because of internet connection issues. Hence, make sure to check your internet connection and ensure that it is not disconnected or malfunctioning unbeknownst to you. Turn your router on and off, then check if the issue is resolved or not. If that doesn’t help then go into “Network and Internet Settings” in your settings and reset your network adapters. If your WiFi is laggy, switch to Ethernet for a more stable connection. Lastly, you can try resetting your router to resolve the issue.

Update your Steam Client

Many users have reported that any and every game on their Steam library gave them connection errors when the client was not updated to the latest version. Hence, to fix this issue, exit your Steam client completely and restart it for an auto-update. Then, boot Dead by Daylight back up again and you should no longer be getting the error code.

Turn off your VPN Software/Proxy Server

As mentioned before, VPN software and Proxy servers can interfere with server authentication modules and stop DbD from starting, in which case you will get the Dead by Daylight error code 8012. Hence, make sure to disable VPN software completely, whether it is a third-party program or native. As for the Proxy Server, here is how to disable it:

  • On your keyboard, press the Windows key + R, and when the Run command dialog pops up, type in “ms-settings:network-proxy” and hit enter.
  • This will open up the Proxy settings, where you will find two options named “Automatic Proxy Setup” and “Manual Proxy Setup.”
  • Disable both of these options and then reboot your computer.

Repair your Easy Anti-Cheat Software

As mentioned in the causes, the Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) Software being corrupted can cause DbD to display the error code. For this reason, you can repair the EAC software for DbD using the following steps:

  • Go to your Steam or Epic Games client and access Dead by Daylight’s game files. Then, find the folder named “EasyAntiCheat.”
  • Open the folder and right-click the file named “EasyAntiCheat_Setup.exe” and hit Run as Administrator. Then, click “Yes” when the dialog box asking for permission pops up.
  • When the setup dialog box boots up, you will either see the option named “Install Service” or “Repair Service.” Click on whichever one shows up and complete the setup.

Once you complete the setup, boot Dead by Daylight up again and your game should be up and running!

Flush your DNS Cache

Just like the EAC software, the DNS cache can also become corrupted and stop DbD from starting up. For this reason, you need to flush your DNS cache and here is how you can do that:

  • On your keyboard, press the Windows key + R, and when the Run command dialog pops up, type in “cmd” and hit enter.
  • When the Command Prompt dialog box shows up, copy and paste the following commands in the same order:
    • ipconfig /release
    • ipconfig /renew
    • ipconfig /flushdns

Once this is done, boot your game back up again and you should no longer be getting the error code.
