Give the trailer for Steel Defier a watch and there’s a chance that the pain of Fall Guys will come to the fore. See, whilst this is far removed from that timewaster, it fills us with similar vibes, strangely. That’s a good thing. 

Available right now for download and play on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S (Optimised), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC is Steel Defier from the stupidly prolific Ratalaika Games (what’s the current streak of a publisher releasing a game every week!?) and those at Viridino Studios – the creative minds behind what is on offer. 

Priced at £4.99 with a little launch discount in place, Steel Defier works on fast-paced gameplay in which you find yourself as a sole survivor in a prison ship. Whilst you were – possibly/maybe – living a good life, after a ship malfunction it appears that all others have been wiped out; killed. You’re the only one left – and you must escape. 

But escape here means making your way to a small spaceship that can blast you off to unknown worlds. The thing is, to get access to that ship you’ll need to work your way through a whole multitude of maze-like rooms that make up your current prison. And if navigating those wasn’t difficult enough, you’ll have the ship’s defense system trying to stop you. 

What plays out is that Steel Defier will deliver you some forty rooms, each of which you’ll need to traverse, picking up access cards, dodging traps and obstacles (that’s where we’re getting the Fall Guys hit from), utilising powerful upgrades and the like. Exploration is going to be key here, particularly as each room comes with its own unique characteristics. 

The key features you’ll find as you play through Steel Defier are as follows…

• Every single room has a different combination of traps, with different speed multipliers and even environmental conditions, like the power outage that limits the player’s field of view and produces a quite scary alarm sound.
• Each trap moves at a different speed, covers a different amount of walkable area and sometimes even follows the player or explodes after a short delay. To counter them, the player is advised to collect as many suit upgrades as possible, like the ability to slow down time, dash through traps and even double jump.
• Every item in the game will grant a different ability to the player, allowing them to enhance their dodging capabilities in unique ways. Some suit upgrades even have “secret” usages, for example: the dash ability is mainly used to traverse the environment faster, but you can also use it to go through traps without being harmed.
• The player isn’t able to directly fight the spaceship’s defence system, as he’s not equipped with a gun. However, the game is still packed with action, since the player will always be surrounded by increasingly more aggressive traps. Also, with every suit upgrade the player will become more powerful and capable of overcoming any challenge.
