Apple is re-releasing its new HomeKit architecture in iOS 16.4 after it was pulled in an earlier version.

The architecture initially debuted in iOS 16.2 but users quickly ran into problems with devices getting stuck “updating” or becoming entirely unresponsive.

Apple decided to pull the update while it investigated the issues. iOS 16.3 and iOS 16.3.1 arrived without any sign of the new HomeKit’s return.

Anyone eager to get started with the new HomeKit will be relieved to know that users on the iOS 16.4 beta are seeing a “Home Upgrade Available” option in the Home app.

We’ll have to wait and see if this latest version is stable enough for daily usage as more users get some experience with it. However, initial reports appear positive.

One user on Reddit says he was using the new architecture since it was initially released with iOS 16.2 but saw a degradation in how cameras were working (or not…)

“Slow access to cam, cams that wouldn’t go Live, dropped frame rates, live views that would stop after a few seconds, cams going offline in HK (HomeKit),” wrote the user.

However, since iOS 16.4, the user reports that everything is working “snappy” and called it a night and day difference.

Interestingly, it doesn’t seem like anyone who upgraded HomeKit with iOS 16.2 are being asked to upgrade again.

Any iOS 16.4 users who are yet to upgrade should be able to do so in the Home app under the ‘More’ button > Home Settings > Software Update. You’ll need to tap ‘Learn More’ under ‘Home Upgrade Available’ and then follow the prompts to perform the upgrade.
