In this blog post I’m sharing my favorite 7 leap year picture books that are perfect to use in the classroom. Picture books are one of my favorite things to pick out for a new theme.. holiday.. or event. And the leap year is no different! The fact it only comes around once every 4 years makes it extra exciting to celebrate!

1. It’s My Birthday.. Finally!
This story is about a boy called Miles who is born on February 29th. In the book he is celebrating his birthday on Saturday… but there’s a little confusion. Is he eight? Or two?!
2. Leopold’s Long Awaited Leap Year Birthday
In this book, Leopold and his parents are patiently waiting for his first birthday… On February 29th… However it just never seems to come! Finally, the wise doctor works out the calendars, clocks and seasons.. and it means that Leopold has a Leap Year birthday! Which his mother calls a peek-a-boo holiday! This is a fun read for students and probably one of our favorites.
3. Leap’s Day: February 29th
This book is all about the calendar, friendship and discussing things that make us special. Leap sets out to find a special day – a birthday – for each of his friends.. But discovers that first he must create a calendar! And when he does… That Leap Year comes along every four years!
4. The Leap Year Turtle
We love this story! Students will be able to learn all about the legend of the Leap Year Turtle.
5. Mommy, Where’s My Birthday?
This one is another of our favorite leap year books to pull out. This book consists of a little boy, called Jamar, asks his mother a question about celebrating his birthday. His mother has to explain what a leap year is and how the calendar works.
6. It’s Not Leap Year This Year!
A fun read about a boy called Miles who was born on February 29th… And there’s just one little problem with this.. February 29th does not come around every year! But it’s ok.. Because Miles’ mom told him he could pick any day he wanted to celebrate his birthday.. But what day is Miles going to pick to celebrate a non-Leap Year birthday?
7. The Leap Year Book
How many leap years have we had since the calendar was reformed in 1582? And if you were born on February 29, 1944.. How old would you be? When would you celebrate your golden birthday?
This book answers these questions and so many more in this fun leap year book.
