Overview of features
I have to say, I was pretty excited to use the Don after reading up on the plethora of features it offers. Whether you’re just getting into dabbing or have a good bit of experience using dab rigs, you’ll be blown away by all this device has to offer.
Here are some of my favorite features this device has to offer, as well as some recommendations on what I think could be improved.
1. Excellent battery life
With a portable device like this, you’d think that you’d have to spend as much time charging the device as you do using it, forfeiting extended dabbing sessions completely – but not with the Don. It’s like The Kind Pen heard our prayers (and answered them) by somehow squeezing in a powerful 3000mAh battery, designed for longer usage (around 8-10 sessions to be exact).
With all the electronic devices I already need to charge on a daily basis (i.e., smartphone, smartwatch, laptop), this dab rig only needs charging every few days so it’s one less thing on that seemingly endless list.
You do have to charge the device fully before you can use it initially, which (even though it’s a small thing) I did find frustrating because I was so excited to use it. I reminded myself of the phrase “all good things come to those who wait”, and this dab rig is definitely worth that wait!
2. Portable & thoughtful design
The Don was definitely designed with portability, convenience, and comfort in mind. Other, more traditional dab systems I’ve used aren’t particularly travel friendly, but The Kind Pen has mastered the portable dabbing market.
It’s freaking tiny for a dab rig! I feel like I’ve just been handed the latest iPhone after having a cellphone from the 80’s all this time…
The Don is marketed as a discreet device with the words “fits in the palm of your hand” in parentheses. And it does. Even in my small hands!
The device literally takes up about the same amount of space as a cell phone (or a box mod for old-school vapers), making it 100% pocket/bag friendly.
I like the fact that the glass mouthpiece twists/folds down because it allows me to travel with it without worrying that the glass piece will get lost or break during transport. Plus, the silicone sleeve on the mouthpiece prevents any accidental lip burns, an excellent feature when you think about how hot these devices have to get to heat up the dabs.
3. Cooler dabs with a built-in water filtration system
I think this feature is particularly awesome. Not only does the device protect me from burning my lips, but it goes a step further by adding a water-filtration system, which cools the dab vapor produced before it goes into my throat and lungs. It works best when you use icy cold water because you can only fill up the small tank about 1/3 of the way (otherwise you run the risk of getting water in your mouth).
It’s not a HUGE difference in dabbing temperature, but it is something. And it’s noticeable – the cooled vapor definitely allows me to better taste the flavor of the dab (and take bigger hits 😜).
Would I prefer a slightly bigger device if it meant I got a slightly bigger water tank? Probably not. I think I’d go with the pocket-friendly portability of this device over a bigger tank every time.
4. Smooth, flavorful dabs
While we’re on the subject of flavor, it’s not just the cooler hits that helps this device produce such great flavor, as the Don also features a coil-less atomizer. OK, coil-less devices aren’t going to be the best option for people that like huge rips, but they are ideal for people (like me) that prefer a smoother and more flavorful experience.
The coil-less design also means less wastage when you’re dabbing concentrates because it offers an even temperature throughout the dish, meaning you can enjoy every last drop.
5. Adjustable temps and airflow
The Don also offers adjustable dabbing temperatures (in F or C) at the touch of a button with single-degree precision (press once to change the temp by 1 degree or touch and hold for jumps in tens). Thanks to the carb cap and included tether, airflow is easy to control too, allowing you to experience a tight or loose pull.
For vapers who like a fine-tuned dabbing experience (myself included!), these are fantastic customizable options that aren’t available on some even pricier models from different brands.
6. Lifetime warranty
I was shocked to read that the Don offers a free lifetime warranty, regardless of what happens to your device. The Kind Pen even promises to replace the device in any type of accident, “Even if you run it over with your car!”. Say what?!
If you absentmindedly leave the device where disaster could strike (I’ve been known to leave phones and coffees on top of my truck, for example), you can rest easy knowing that your investment is fully replaceable. Of course, you’ll want to take a gander at their warranty before submitting a claim, but this is an incredible offer that isn’t matched by many (if any?) other vape device brands.
7. Compatible with various concentrates and oils
As mentioned previously, the Don can also be used with both all types of concentrates, waxes, and crumbles, as well as oils. The versatility of this device attracted me from the moment I saw it, especially since I tend to change things up rather frequently. I haven’t found a concentrate or dab yet that the Don can’t handle with grace and perfection.
Is The Don By Kind Pen worth the money?
When I first saw the price tag, I thought I’d clicked on the wrong model or something. OK, three-digit price tags can be scary and sometimes I have trouble justifying such a cost. But this portable dab rig literally has everything I could ask for from a dab rig (and more) and I paid a hell of a lot more for my last one (speaking of which, I haven’t even used my desktop-style setup since I’ve had the Don in my possession!).
The Don comes loaded with tons of useful features, as well as some options that I wouldn’t have even thought to ask for. With its surprisingly powerful performance, long-lasting battery, adjustable airflow, cooling water-filter, PLUS the lifetime warranty, the Don is an absolute bargain.
How to use the Don Device
Using a dab rig will take a bit of a technique, but practice makes perfect! I loved that there was an in-depth video that shows how to use the device so feel free to check that out if you start to question your methods. Before you use The Don, be sure to charge it fully to get the most out of it.
Once the device is fully charged, take the top off, scoop up a bit of your resin/wax/crumble, and “dab” it into the center of the rig. Carefully pop the top back on and set the Don to your preferred dabbing temperature.
Lift up the foldable glass tube, press firmly on the firing pin, and puff! If it’s your first time dabbing then I recommend you start off with smaller dabs and smaller hits, but you can keep increasing both until you reach your desired tolerance, hit, and high.
Conclusion
The Don really is a one-of-a-kind device and I was absolutely floored with all the thought that went into creating such a device.
I would definitely recommend it to people looking for a portable and efficient electronic dab rig. If you’re looking for the biggest rips on the market, the Don won’t be for you. But if you prefer smooth, cool, flavorful dabs, then you won’t be sorry you chose the Don.
I especially loved the compact size of this device, the long-lasting battery, and the foldable glass mouthpiece (otherwise I’m pretty sure I’d lose it pretty quickly). Plus, the lifetime warranty offered by The Kind Pen is simply unmatched elsewhere on the market.
Oh, and I nearly forgot… The Don also features five different LED light options that light up the device from behind the tank. Yes, it’s a bit gimmick-y, but I can assure you, it’s also a wicked conversation starter at parties!
