Six Takeaways from the Destiny 2 Final Shape Showcase

Date:

Bungie unveiled the campaign and several new features in “Destiny 2: The Final Shape” during their annual showcase on Tuesday.

Destiny 2’s Season of the Witch was also revealed during the live stream. That is available to play at this moment. The story of that season will help lead into The Final Shape as players will re-connect with Immaru, Savathun’s ghost from The Witch Queen expansion.

As for The Final Shape, a lot was revealed, but here are six major takeaways from the showcase.

The end of the light and dark saga

The Final Shape is the culmination of the decade-long story that started back in 2014. Players will see the inside of The Traveler for the very first time in the new Pale Heart destination. However, the campaign won’t be where The Witness is confronted, that will happen in the new raid. Nevertheless, this is where the story ends, it’s the “Avengers: Endgame” of Destiny.

Bungie disappointed hundreds of thousands of people with Lightfall’s narrative and they’re looking to deliver big with this one.

Episodes

Keeping it rolling with the MCU references, the story won’t end after Endgame. Bungie is shifting from the current seasonal format to a more consistent narrative format known as episodes. There will be 3 episodes a year split up into 3 6-week acts. The first episode is “Echoes”, presumably based on the Vex. The second episode is “Revenant”, which presumably follows the Scorn, specifically Fikrul, the Fanatic. The third episode is “Heresy”, which presumably follows the Hive.

This makes it so there’s new story content every week as opposed to around 8 weeks of story followed by several weeks of nothing. It’s a good move that leaves many story-driven players intrigued.

He’s back

Fan-favorite character Cayde-6, the hunter vanguard, is coming back to Destiny. Cayde was initially killed off in Forsaken in 2018 but he’s back, probably through some power that’ll be explained. Nathan Fillion is reprising his role as Cayde’s voice actor.

He will act as a guide to players as they explore The Traveler’s pale heart. It appears that he was stuck in there for quite some time after his unfortunate demise at the hands of Uldren Sov. Regardless, Bungie couldn’t have a grand finale for this story without its most beloved character.

New (and returning) supers

As with every major expansion, there will be new supers for each class. Titans will finally be getting another ranged super with a void axe. Hunters will be getting an arc super where they throw an arc blade and teleport to do massive damage. Warlocks will be greeted with the return of radiance, the solar sunsinger super from Destiny 1.

Crota’s End

Every year since 2021, Bungie has remastered a raid in Destiny 2. First, it was Vault of Glass, then King’s Fall and now Crota’s End. The loot, which includes fan favorites such as legendary sniper Black Hammer and exotic auto rifle Necrochasm is returning as well. It’s safe to assume that some encounters will be tweaked as the original can be soloed in under 10 minutes.

The world’s first race kicks off on September 1st.

Fireteam power

The biggest change to some high-level activities, especially raids, is the fireteam power system. This mechanic introduced in The Final Shape will boost the collective power level of the team to near the highest level player. For example, if five players have a power level of 1985 and the leader has 2000, the power of the five players will be boosted.

This changes things because it essentially makes it so only one player needs to power level. Some are mad at this change because it takes the grind out of the game. However, it allows a lot of casual players who have lives outside of the game to engage in raids and other endgame activities.

Fireteam power will only affect some activities. Nightfalls and contest mode raids will have this function turned off.

Conclusion

Destiny 2: The Final Shape will have to answer a lot of questions and send this saga off in the right way. After the disappointment of Lightfall, many are thinking they wasted their time and money. However, it looks as though Bungie is heading in the right direction.
