Walter spent just one season at Baylor, but helped his draft stock along the way. Now he is in the 2024 NBA Draft.

As a five-star recruit, Walter stayed in the state of Texas to play for Baylor. In his lone season as a Bear, Walter averaged 14.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Although he wasn’t the most efficient player, he improved his draft stock and helped the Bears. Baylor made the second round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament with Walter’s help.

Following the NCAA Tournament, Walter declared for the 2024 NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a first round pick.

Ja’Kobe Walter Strengths

Walter has proven the ability to shoot well at the college level, although it can be streaky. He shot 34.1 percent from deep at Baylor, with room for improvement. Walter can shoot off the catch and off the dribble. He also shot 79.2 percent from the free throw line.

While he was mostly used off-ball, Walter has solid ball-handling skills. He can handle the ball and run an offense for limited minutes. Walter won’t wow anyone with his passing or his ball-handling, he is capable of protecting the ball and setting up his teammates decently.

His motor and basketball IQ show up on both ends of the floor. He brings energy which can uplift his team. Walter makes the smart basketball play on offense and knows how to be a good team defender. These are both good qualities that can help him earn a role early in his career.

Ja’Kobe Walter Weaknesses

He shoots well, but can be streaky. Walter can have good nights where he shoots lights out and bad nights where he is really off. The result is a 3-point percentage that is just 34.1 percent. He will need to improve that consistency at the next level.

While he can handle the ball well, Walter can struggle to create his own shot. He struggles to create wiggle room. The lack of an ability to free himself, means that a lot of his points has to be set up for him. He can improve and be used in isolation situations with time.

Walter has a solid frame, but needs to add strength. There are times where he can be stopped when driving to the basket because of a lack of relative strength. On defense, other players can overpower him, despite his good defensive effort.

Projected Draft Range: First Round Pick
