Could AI one day replace human artists?

Date:

Ever since the introduction of AI (Artificial Intelligence), two sides of the fence have taken up arms, both for and against its uses. On the one hand, the helpful features and solutions can make life easier for personal and professional purposes alike, but on the other side of the coin, if an intelligence expands beyond the artificial prospect, it has been claimed to pose a risk to humanity. Rather than discussing the pros and cons of AI, and whether it could be as dangerous as it is useful, this post will explore the possibility of the technology replacing one particular type of career choice; artistry.

AI art in all its glory

It’s no secret that AI is capable of producing some of the most incredibly diverse, yet attractive artwork imaginable. Just a few keywords and an AI portrait generator could create something iconic in a matter of seconds. But if the work of an AI was to be compared to an artist, it can be recognized, so much so that many galleries are now considering opening studios simply to showcase the works of art produced by artificial intelligences.

There are also options to choose the style of artwork produced, from oil painting, right through to watercolors and even enamel paints. This does provide somewhat of an elaborate feel to the artwork, but most critics will agree on one thing – the lack of depth and emotion.

AI is artificial by name and by nature

Artificial intelligence is exactly that – artificial. It is designed to replicate what humans do, say, think and feel, but this isn’t real. It’s a mimic. As eventful and unique as artificial artwork can appear on the surface, if you scratch just below, it becomes apparent that there is no emotion behind the image, simply what the AI believes to be most relevant based on the specification and parameters that it has been assigned.

As a result, artists that are worrying may be better off turning their attention away from AI artwork and instead accept that a new brand of imagery has been introduced to the industry.

Will artists ever be out of work?

For millennia, artists have found themselves in demand. From mosaics and ancient paintings, to modern renditions produced by Banksy that are often abstract and may have seemed an alien concept to our human ancestors. There is certainly the appeal of AI artwork, so much so that many productions can be found being sold online, each of which is unique as the intelligent is clever enough to know that even the same instructions shouldn’t produce the same results when it comes to artwork.

But with that in mind, human artists shouldn’t feel concerned as even historians have clearly stated that art as a form of expression will always be required by humans based on historical evidence.

There are some artists that have already embraced the shift in dynamic, with some online collaborating with AI to produce unique pieces that showcase their talents when combined with those of an AI. As the years go by, there is no doubt that some of the most elaborate works of art will be produced hand in hand between humans and machines. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing, as the more styles of art that there are, the broader the appeal will be to a growing audience.

Taking advantage of the potential of AI

Another good use of AI for artists is as a source of inspiration. As keywords and specifications can be given to an artificial intelligence, it can then produce a work of art accordingly. This piece, or a selection of pieces can be used by an artist to create their own version, which can be modified and enhanced to their preferences.

Some artists prefer keeping things simple by using an AI tool as a GIF maker, such as the software available from CapCut, which can be used to produce GIFs and memes of all styles. As CapCut specializes in media editing and modification, the service can provide a well-rounded solution for those wanting to produce GIFs and videos in general.

Creating a GIF using CapCut is fairly straightforward, with a dedicated section available on their website. This can be accessed directly and an account is advised for those wanting to enjoy the features of the service, as well as download with minimal fuss.

To make a GIF on CapCut, a media file will be needed, typically in MP4 format, but others can be accepted, too. The user will then be able to hone in on a specific part of the file once it has uploaded, where it will then be converted into a moving GIF. Alternatively, a protected GIF file can be created which can help to prevent unauthorized duplication for moving media images. This file can then be downloaded and utilized as required.

The results are often quite varied, allowing for a unique finish each time, and certain themes can be applied to match a particular preference.

When it comes to AI artwork, it is worth noting that even career choices that were threatened by tools like ChatGPT have found ways to integrate the software and still retain a human input. Just because a technology is new and potentially frightening doesn’t mean that it should be ruled out, in fact, many businesses are finding that the use of AI within their enterprise has helped to streamline plenty of their processes. The same can be said for artists. For traditional creatives, they can simply ignore the concept of AI. For those that prefer a modern touch to what they produce, then they may even discover ways to include AI within what they do for even more varied results.
