Aston Martin will receive new recognition when the 2023 FIA Formula One World Championship season gets underway this Sunday in Bahrain when it becomes the Official FIA Medical Car of Formula 1. During the upcoming Grand Prix season, the brand returns for a third season as the Official FIA Safety Car of Formula One.

“We are delighted to continue our partnership with Formula One and the FIA this season, with the pinnacle of motorsport a perfect environment for Aston Martin to showcase the capabilities of our ultra-luxury high-performance cars,” said Roberto Fedeli, Aston Martin chief technology officer, in a statement. 

“DBX707 is the perfect vehicle for the critical role as an Official FIA Medical Car of Formula One, providing the performance and punch required for the world’s greatest racing circuits, in addition to the flexibility and space required by the sport’s officials and medics.”

An upgraded DBX707

To serve Formula One, the DBX707 received significant engine, transmission, suspension, and braking improvements, as well as revised body styling, an updated interior, and more precise dynamics. The DBX707’s generates 707 metric horsepower, or 697 Imperial horsepower, and 900 newton-meters of torque, or 664 pound-feet. This ensures the medical car will reach accident scenes far quicker than before.

A new wet clutch transmission that offers considerably quicker gear changes and an increased launch capability known as “Race Start” that is ready and waiting for the call to action from Race Control is one of the modifications that enable more responsiveness than ever. Also essential to the car’s dynamics are Pirelli’s specially designed P-Zero tires.

But beyond mere upgrades, the Aston Martin DBX707 Official FIA Medical Car will be upfitted with the requisite gear, including fire extinguishers, medical bags and a defibrillator. Given that the DBX707 will be driven at high speeds on the track, it’s also is fitted with FIA-approved racing seats with a six-point racing harnesses. On. Amore practical note, passengers will be able to communicate with Race Control, and will be fed the FIA Marshalling system as well as biometric data from the F1 drivers and live television.

“It’s definitely going to allow the Medical Car team to fully focus on the job and respond quickly and safely during any on-track deployments,” said Alan van der Merwe, FIA Medical Car driver. “It’s great to be heading into a new season well prepared and well equipped.”

Another Aston leads off Formula One

In 2023, the Aston Martin Vantage FIA Safety Car will lead the Formula One cars around the formation lap, so Aston Martins will be visible in addition to support vehicles from the very beginning of the race. This special Vantage was created by the engineering team at Aston Martin’s design and engineering department in Gaydon, UK, and comes with safety features that the FIA has stipulated.

It makes for the ideal Safety Car, as it took the GT victory in January’s Rolex 24 at Daytona. The Safety Car is inspired by the Aston Martin Vantage Formula 1 Edition. 

A race-inspired street car

More than merely a sticker and stripe upgrade, the Aston Martin Vantage Formula 1 Edition wears the racing team’s Aston Martin Racing Green color and is accented with a wide rear wing. The car’s grille receives horizontal strakes, and there’s large 21-inch footwear.

Under the bonnet resides a Mercedes-AMG–sourced twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 that provides 527 horsepower and 505 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission and electronic limited-slip rear differential are standard and boast revised software. It also gets 10% stiffer springs and an adaptive suspension with superior recoil dampening, while the front suspension gets additional negative wheel camber.

And like its track sibling, it’s shod with Pirelli P Zero tires.

It makes for a track car you can drive home. 

But Aston Martin remains busy as it transitions to electrification from internal combustion engine power. 

In January, the company revealed more details about the DBS 770 Ultimate, the company’s penultimate internal combustion GT supercar. This year will be the last for Aston Martins powered only by internal combustion engines as the 2024 Valhalla is slated to be introduced by the end of the year.

The moves come as the company appointed Tony Joseph, 54, as Aston Martin Lagonda regional President for the Americas, having previously served as former President of McLaren Americas.

In all, it marks a new era for the brand, one that retains its primary focus as a provider of performance luxury cars. It’s the heart of a brand well-suited to support the world’s most-respected and most-watched racing series.

“With the eyes of the world on our products, there is pressure to perform, but that intensity pushes us to constantly improve. Seeing our cars used in an official capacity at such prestigious events is something that everyone at Aston Martin is very proud of,” Fedeli said.
