FIFA has been one of the biggest worldwide game releases due to the popularity of the sport and due to an evolving esports scene we might see a big shift into an ever evolving scene.

The sports simulation esports scene is nothing new: there have been Madden and NBA 2k tournaments for a long time across the US, but with a path taken by other esports titles we have seen a meteoric rise on esports titles. It should be no surprise that one of the most popular sports in the world is also getting into esports as a whole.

One of the most impressive stories has to be that of Donovan ‘Tekkz’ Hunt, the 18-year-old has had an amazing start to his career while also speaking out towards the state of the game throughout tournaments. The British born player has seen nine tournament victories in addition to another seven top four finishes in a year and a half of becoming a pro player.

From Bucharest with Love

Tekkz’s first tournament was under the F2 organization, an organization no longer in the FIFA scene. At 16-years-old many people wrote off Tekkz on his first tournament, an impressive player with not much to show for prior. He had been a player that had impressed through the Weekend League (FIFA’s ranked ladder.)

Tekkz went through the knockout stage with relative ease, completing a Cinderella story against North American talent Joksan Redonda. No one had ever had such a dominant tournament and with that win Tekkz immediately made a name for himself.

Tekkz Went back to Bucharest to compete in the PGLBucharest Cup, finishing first yet again going through some of the best xbox players in the world. One of these being former Interactive World Cup winner Spencer ‘Gorilla’ Ealing. Tekkz seemed to be looking to put his stamp on the scene but then failed to win the next four tournaments he played. He never really underperformed during the round robin stage.

Best FIFA Player in the World

The next four tournaments Tekkz participated saw him win. One of this was with Nicolas99FC, one of the highest praised PS players in the world. Tekkz was proving to be a force to be reckoned with at just 16-years-old. He seemed to be a safe bet that would make it far into any tournament.

Tekkz had the chance to represent his favorite Premier League Club, Liverpool, through the ePremier League, a competition only open for UK residents. After that win Tekkz was only able to win one minor tournament before having the opportunity to compete in his first ever Interactive World Cup. 

With the incredible start many pointed to Tekkz as one of the favorites to win the IWC, the hot start to his career and the showings he had were impressive enough to have him as a top player, even given his young age. Now 17, Tekkz was poised to do some damage during the IWC. Sadly, things were clearly not the same as Tekkz barely missed on getting out of the group stage of the tournament by one point.

Regardless the disappointing end to the year, Tekkz had won more tournaments than any other player since he started competing. Now was the chance for Tekkz to restart and give 2020 an even better showing.

The Rise of P2W and Fall of FIFA 20

FIFA might be one of the most popular games but it is not with a wide array of faults. Game mode, Ultimate Team, is one of the most popular game modes. It is also one with a lot of controversy due to the pay to win model that is innately tied to the game mode.

FUT is a trading card game that lets you create team’s using real life players, these players can be obtained in one of three ways. The first is by buying them in the market using in game currency, the second is by completing selective squad building challenges or objectives and the last one is by opening packs with either in–game currency or by buying fifa points costing real money.

Most pro players have stipends from their organization to spend on the game. Now spending money does not guarantee getting good players but the more you spend the more likely you are to get a better team.

While this is something that a lot of pro’s have to partake in to have a chance to compete in qualifying tournaments a lot also hinges on bugs, mechanics abuse, and changing metas. Tekkz was very clear throughout the course of the FIFA 20 season how unhappy he was with the game.

Like many other players, he stopped playing the game outside of official tournaments and qualifiers. This was by far Tekkz worst showing so far, with just two tournament victories during the 2019/2020 season.

Fnatic goes All-In on Rising Star

On November 6th, 2019, made one of the most impactful signing to date in the esports scene with the signing of Tekkz. This was not the first time Fnatic dabbled in the FIFA scene but it was the first time that they did so as their own endemic brand. We had other organizations such as Rogue and traditional Football teams have also sponsored teams, and with the rise of esports as well as the increasing popularity of real life superstars such as Sergio Kun Aguero getting more involved has some promising out looks on the FIFA world.

Fnatic proved that they meant business as they also signed former Hashtag United Pro Harry Hesketh into the squad. Harry and Tekkz are good friends outside of the game and it was clear that Tekkz wanted to work with Harry for the 2021 season with newly introduced 2v2 mode on Ultimate team looking as a promising tournament format for FIFA.

One of the great things of FIFA is that it is easy to follow for spectators due to the simplicity of the sport, thus making it a great spectator sport. WIth that in mind it is rather simple to bet on a game like FIFA, the important thing is to keep an eye out for tournaments and see how the players are doing. The Fnatic boys should definitely be on everyone’s radar though as they seem to be ready to take over FIFA 21.
