An anniversary of triumph and tragedy

2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio 100th Anniversario

While the Quadrifoglio has always symbolized high-performance Alfa-Romeos, its origin is one of success and sadness.

It first appeared in the 1920s, when Ugo Sivocci joined Italian race car driver Ugo Sivocci on the Alfa Romeo squad. Despite his racing skills, Sivocci was always forced to settle for second place, and was never able to win a race. To ward off his bad luck, in 1924, he painted a four-leaf clover enclosed in a square box on the side of his car. He won his opening race.

However, Sivocci was testing the new Alfa Romeo P1 on the Monza circuit just a few weeks following his Targa Florio win, and he was unable to paint his lucky cloverleaf on the vehicle before hitting the course. Disastrously, he dies in a collision. From then on, all Alfa’s race and high-performance cars have the “Quadrifoglio Verde,” but with one small change. Following Ugo Sivocci’s death, clovers were framed in a triangle, with the missing point symbolizing the loss of Sivocci.

A new century

The new limited editions come as the Alfa expands its product line with the introduction of the compact Tonale SUV. Slotting below the Stelvio SUV, the Tonale is meant to put Alfa more into the mainstream of sporty SUVs. The plug-in hybrid driveline consists of a 1.3-liter turbocharged engine and a 90-kW electric motor that generates 285 horsepower and 30 miles of range. Ordering is open and pricing will start at $42,995.

Like the outside, the inside of the 2024 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio 100th Anniversary receives special trim.

It will be joined by an even smaller SUV scheduled for 2024.

Alfa Romeo is also launching a new Estrema trim, which builds on the brand’s Veloce trim but add something of real value: the Alfa Active Suspension and other driving dynamics technology from the Quadrifoglio. But it shares its all-aluminum, 2.0-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine with Alfa’s Sprint, Ti, and Veloce models.

After that, Alfa Romeo plans to go all-electric by 2027, as its last internal combustion engine vehicle is scheduled to be built in 2026. it will become one of the first Stellantis brands to drop internal combustion engines. That same year, Alfa Romeo will launch a flagship battery-electric SUV will be larger than the midsize Stelvio and will compete with the BMW X5, a vehicle brand that Alfa execs believes to be their key competitor.

Despite the flood of SUVs wearing the Alfa Romeo badge, it will not exclusively sell SUVs, meaning a new Giulia is coming, most like as a battery-electric sedan.
