The UK Government is boosting innovation in cyber-physical infrastructure by awarding £200,000 to the X-Catapult Consortium. This initiative aims to create a vibrant community of tech experts, bridging the gap between industry, academia, and the public sector.

The funding, a result of the Cyber-Physical Infrastructure Ecosystem Building competition launched earlier this year by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), will fuel the development of a robust network focused on areas such as robotics, augmented and virtual reality, and digital twins.

At the heart of this initiative is the concept of cyber-physical infrastructure, which involves the interconnection of technologies that interact with both the real world and virtual systems.

Similar to how individual computers and devices are linked via the internet, these networked technologies possess immense potential and capability. For instance, this interconnected approach could lead to advancements such as electric vehicles communicating with smart energy grids through sensors or robots in factories becoming more efficient in their tasks.

The funding will be channelled into the creation of a national cyber-physical infrastructure ecosystem, facilitating cooperation and knowledge exchange among tech industry players, academic institutions, and the public sector.

George Freeman, Minister for Science, Research and Innovation, said:

“The technologies that power a modern economy are often underpinned by complex physical and virtual foundations which help them function—whether that be environmental sensors or wireless networks for transferring data.

Building a cyber-physical infrastructure is all about creating a more connected, innovative, and resilient UK, where these sophisticated systems can work seamlessly together. We look forward to seeing what the X-Catapult Consortium can do to foster more cooperation and collaboration in this space.”

This collaborative effort is set to revolutionise various sectors by enhancing productivity, improving public health services, and enabling effective environmental monitoring and management.

By investing in collaborative initiatives, the government is empowering the tech community to pioneer solutions that address complex challenges across various sectors.
