Two Oroville men plead guilty to killing Florida brothers during marijuana sale – Chico Enterprise-Record – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

OROVILLE — Two Oroville men are headed to prison for decades, after pleading guilty Tuesday in Butte County Superior Court to a pair of 2020 slayings.

Michael Griff and Austin Hogan, both 24 and residents of Oroville, were part of a trio of men who killed two Florida brothers who came to this area to purchase marijuana. Griff and Hogan fatally shot Jerry Bonds, 39, and Randy Bonds, 33. A third man accused of being involved with the killings is Kyle Smith, 27, of Oroville; he will appear in court Wednesday as jury selection for his trial begins.

Griff, who pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, faces a 50-years-to-life sentence when he next faces a judge Aug. 8. Hogan pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder. He faces a 30-years-to-life term when he’s sentenced, but his sentencing will be delayed until Smith’s case goes to trial.

Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said the case began when the Florida brothers’ family called the Butte County Sheriff’s Office Oct. 21, 2020, to report the brothers missing.

The family told detectives the brothers had flown to the Los Angeles International Airport Oct. 19 and had rented a car.

Family members had tracked one of the brother’s cell phone to the Forbestown area — about 20 miles east of Oroville — but then lost contact.
