What is Runway AI Gen-2?

The second generation of Runway’s AI software, simply titled Runway AI Gen-2, is a major improvement over the first generation. Runway AI Gen-2 can make full videos just from text descriptions, while the older version could only generate new videos by using data from existing ones. Since last September, the firm has been working on this innovative model, and they are now pleased to reveal that it is the first text-to-video AI model available to the general public.

The company claims that its new approach allows users to realistically and consistently synthesize new videos by either using the composition and style of an image or text prompt to apply to the structure of a source video (a feature present in Gen-1) or by using only text prompts.

Gen-1 focused on modifying preexisting video, allowing users to feed in a shaky smartphone clip or a crude 3D animation and then apply an AI-generated overlay. Runway AI Gen-2  is a big improvement over Gen-1 since it combines the two generations’ best qualities, allowing it to apply the composition and style of an image or text prompt to the structure of a source video to generate an entirely new video.

What it has accomplished is truly remarkable: it can now generate brand-new video material from text descriptions alone. The web-based platform can generate videos with a decent level of resolution that, while not photorealistic, show off the technology’s potential. The videos made by Gen-2 Runway AI are very outstanding in comparison to what is already on the market.

Runway AI Gen-2 features

As for the new features, Gen-2 has three additional modes:

• Mode 1 (Text to Video): Create videos in any manner you can think of from scratch using only a text prompt.

• Mode 2 (Text + Image to Video): Generate a video based on a driving image and a text prompt.

• Mode 3 – Image to Video: Generate a video using just a driving image.

Moreover, the modes introduced in Runway AI Gen-1 are carried over to Runway AI Gen-2, such as:

• Mode 4 (Stylization): Use any image or prompt’s aesthetic to inform how your video is rendered in every single frame.
• Mode 5 (Storyboard): Create finished, styled, and moving renderings from mockups.
• Mode 6 (Mask): Isolating subjects.
• Mode 7 (Render): Make photorealistic renderings from a single input image or prompt.
• Mode 8 (Customization): Put Gen-1 to work for you by tweaking the model for better accuracy.

Runway Gen-2 appears to be more concerned with creating videos from scratch, though numerous qualifiers must qualify this judgment. There is a severe lack of accessibility, and the demo videos that Runway has released are short, shaky, and not at all photorealistic.

How to use Runway Gen-2 text-to-video AI?

Those who want the product may have trouble obtaining it for now. The business Runway, which develops AI-powered film and editing tools, has announced the waitlist availability of its Gen 2 AI system; interested parties can sign up for access to it on a closed Discord channel, to which more users will be added on a weekly basis.

This part will be updated when Runway Gen-2 is publicly released.

Its limited release is the most publicized example of text-to-video generation to date outside of a controlled environment. The Alphabet Inc. subsidiary Google and the Meta Platforms Inc. company both demonstrated text-to-video work last year, using examples such as a teddy bear washing dishes and a sailboat on a lake. Still, neither has disclosed intentions to take the work beyond the research phase.
