Respawn Unveils New DDoS Protection For Apex Legends

Date:

Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has announced a new feature that’s sure to please players around the globe: DDoS protection. The announcement was made on Twitter, and included a request for player feedback.

For the time being, this feature only applies to Diamond, Master, and Predator lobbies, so public lobbies will remain unaffected, as will lobbies for all ranks below Diamond. This is somewhat disappointing news for players who aren’t Ranked Mode die-hards, but the announcement tweet’s request for feedback and reference to the “ever-evolving” nature of protecting Apex Legends from bad actors suggests future changes may be on the horizon.

Apex has been the target of several DDoS attacks in the past. Two Xbox players were banned in March 2021 after being identified as the source of an attack, with Respawn making an announcement later that summer to assure players that new avenues were being pursued to protect the game from future attacks. By August, a well-organized collection of Titanfall players attacked Apex in an attempt to bring Respawn’s attention back to Titanfall 1 and 2, which themselves had fallen into a state of chaos due to–you guessed it—DDoS attacks. With Titanfall 2 being run by a skeleton crew, a small group of players had decided to take matters into their own hands.

Apex Legends was back online fairly quickly, but both Titanfall games continued to struggle, and players were understandably concerned about Apex’s stability going forward, especially given the fact that the game runs on a heavily-modified version of Source engine, making it a more attractive target for would-be havoc-wreakers. The efficacy of Respawn’s latest DDoS protection measures remains to be seen, but it stands to reason that lower ranks and public lobbies may soon have this protection put in place as well if the results of this initial test are positive.

Apex Legends is free to play on console and PC. A mobile version of the game, Apex Legends Mobile, is available for download on Android and iOS devices.
