Qt Group and Qualcomm have announced a collaboration to streamline the development of advanced graphical user interfaces (GUIs) and software quality assurance for industrial IoT devices.

The partnership brings together Qt’s cross-platform development tools with Qualcomm Technologies’ processors, potentially allowing IoT manufacturers to significantly speed up the time-to-market for their devices.

Qualcomm is one of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers, providing processors for devices across industries including smartphones, automobiles, extended reality, and IoT. By porting Qt’s platform onto Qualcomm’s software, software vendors can now develop and test UI solutions more efficiently using Qualcomm’s advanced processors.

The collaboration also makes it easier and faster for hardware vendors to develop Systems on Modules (SoMs) – compact computer systems that can be used to create embedded electronic devices like robots and security cameras.

“When you tune out the noise surrounding tech innovation today, what is it really at the end of the day that impacts end users the most? It’s the user experience – specifically the user interface,” said Roger Mazzella, Senior Product Manager at Qt.

In addition to UI capabilities, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) accessing Qualcomm’s Qt-supported processors can leverage Qt’s software development and quality assurance tools, lowering production barriers.

“The benefit of Qt’s technologies is that they already have a history of implementation across 70 industries,” said Juhapekka Niemi, SVP of Product Management at Qt. “We will give hardware and software vendors for IoT the UI/UX development and QA tools they need right out of the box.”

By using Qt’s framework, IoT manufacturers can apply advanced 3D graphics capabilities to device UIs in a leaner package compared to game engines, which often include unnecessary features for IoT GUI development.

“At Qualcomm Technologies, we strongly believe in building an industry ecosystem that allows manufacturers to create excellent hardware and software solutions for vertical markets using our chipsets,” said Manvinder Singh, VP of Strategy and Partner Solutions Development of IoT at Qualcomm.

Qt Group’s tools aim to promote better alignment between developers and designers by allowing them to work simultaneously within the same framework, ideal for cross-platform development of low-powered and embedded devices.

“This collaboration gives developers a ready-made solution to build their creative solutions on top of,” Singh concludes.
