Session: Today’s youth average 6.5 hours per day of screen time. They are effectively citizens of two worlds — the flesh and blood and virtual worlds. As tech makes the world smaller, creating a culture of belonging is more important than ever.
In addition to course and skill-specific content, educators must prepare students for responsible citizenship in both worlds. Self-awareness and relationship skills are as important in the virtual world as IRL.
Educators are responsible for furthering the whole child’s development in both worlds. SEL and technology can combine to foster good citizenship in both.
Content-driven, tech-infused classrooms often pose challenges to regularly incorporating SEL into the curriculum. Participants will have opportunities to discuss their successes and challenges. Presenters will share research-informed ways, methods, and best practices they use to leverage technology to help students develop social-emotional skills and become responsible digital and real-world citizens. This interactive session will allow participants to practice some of these methods.

About Seth Fleischauer: A graduate of Princeton University, Queens College School of Education, and the New York City Teaching Fellows Program, Seth taught in NYC public schools before founding Banyan Global Learning in 2008 and establishing its unique distance learning model. Seth lives in Portland, OR but still loves the New York Mets.
About Courtney Dayhuff: Since earning a degree in Multilingual/Multicultural Education from Arizona State University, Courtney has worked in ESL/EFL classrooms in the U.S., Costa Rica, Taiwan, and China. She oversees Banyan Global Learning’s unique daily transpacific distance learning program (Learning Live), including facilitating feelings-forward international student collaborations. When not in the classroom, Courtney enjoys playing music, traveling, adventurous outdoor activities, and time spent with family, friends, and her dog Wallace.

Session 1: Are you getting the course success – including numerical outcomes- you want? Trained or not, designing distance learning courses is a challenge that too often falls short of our visions and the learners’ expectations. This interactive workshop has a unique focus that can change that! Instead of shaping content, we’ll look closely at how to design a learner experience that leads to real and lasting change. We’ll look at how learning happens, the necessary cognitive and affective aspects, and tools to individualize your instruction as needed. This content is a new perspective on instructional design. It’s about the medium of learning — the ‘what’ to think about behind the design of your instruction. This approach results in greater student persistence. But more importantly, it opens the way for meaningful learning and growth in your students. And because we practice what we preach, you’ll leave this interactive workshop with more than insights and ideas. You’ll have draft tools for designing your engaging curriculum. And you’ll see new ways that you can be that teacher-trainer-coach who empowers real change!
Session 2: The Chemistry of Success for Online Learning — Do you struggle with retaining students in your online courses or trainings? Do you wish your students could be more successful in those courses or trainings? Do you have great ideas for activities and assessments but find it challenging to implement them in an online learning environment? Then this workshop is for you! We will use interactive activities to demonstrate a successful approach that has been used to teach a fully online introductory chemistry lab. The Chemistry of Success is a model for successful course development. It begins with knowing why students have trouble with online learning. Practical solutions to those problems will be presented, and we’ll give you tools for developing course activities and assessments that will keep your students engaged and successful. Based on Bloom’s taxonomy, this approach applies the fundamentals of educational psychology to the online learning environment. It’s a model that can be used to develop any online course, from basic skills to graduate courses and professional training. Not only will your students be more engaged, but with this dynamic approach, you will also enjoy the instructional design process!

| More Confident, Agile, Inclusive, Engaging, and Effective: The Improvisation Edge for Educators |

Session: Educators are tasked with delivering curriculum and creating consistent learning outcomes–yet we must arrive at each session ready to dance at the moment with each new group of learners. Students bring tremendously diverse perspectives, experiences, prior knowledge, learning styles, and personalities. Our role as educators requires thinking on our feet; sensing and being responsive to the ever-shifting dynamics and surprises of the classroom; listening well; and embodying a flexible, confident, and engaging presence. How can educators–from the newest to the most seasoned–step out of default patterns and comfort zones to be more effective facilitators of learning? How can we meet learners where they are, adapting to each group’s needs and opportunities while focusing on key learning outcomes? How can we bring a more engaging, energizing, conscious, confident, and fully embodied presence to each session? How can we keep content we’ve repeatedly delivered fresh? Carrie Spaulding, an educator and professional improviser with 23 years of experience designing and delivering robust curricula for diverse learners, knows firsthand the game-changing power of improvisation skills in a learning environment. Participants will learn core concepts of improvisation that will instantly help them lead learning experiences with more confidence and impact.
