Daniels has had a long college career and developed well over his time to be one of the best players in the sport. He is now in the 2024 NFL Draft.
He was a four-star recruit in the class of 2019. Daniels started right away for the Sun Devils and played at the school for three seasons. During his time as a Sun Devil, he passed for 6,025 yards, 32 touchdowns and 13 interceptions on 62.4 percent completion. He also rushed for 1,288 yards and 13 touchdowns. Following the 2021 season, Daniels transferred to LSU. In 2022, he helped the Tigers win the SEC West by passing for 2,913 yards, 17 touchdowns and three interceptions on 68.6 percent completion. He also tallied 885 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. For the 2023 season, Daniels passed for 3,812 yards, 40 touchdowns and four interceptions on 72.2 percent completion. He also rushed for 1,134 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Tigers went 9-3 with Daniels and he was able to take home the Heisman Trophy.
Following a great season at LSU, Daniels is headed to the 2024 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a first round pick.
Jayden Daniels Strengths
The greatest strength of Daniels is his mobility. He has the ability to escape pressure and create big plays. While he can do a better job keeping his eyes upfield to throw on the run, when he escapes the pocket he is a dangerous ball-carrier. He is fast and is able to elude tacklers well. Daniels rushed for over 1,000 yards this past season and can be a big weapon for an NFL team with his dual-threat ability.
Daniels has improved his accuracy throughout his college career. He has nice accuracy on short throws, which are placed in a position to let receivers run after the catch. Daniels also has accuracy to the intermediate part of the field, as he throws the ball in between tight windows. He made an effort to push the ball downfield more and showed he could complete passes downfield at a decent rate.
He has shown good field vision when making throws. Daniels reads zone coverage very well and is able to find holes to exploit. One of the best parts of his game is that he doesn’t put the ball in harm’s way. He will occassionally make the wrong read, but even when he does, Daniels isn’t turnover prone.
Jayden Daniels Weaknesses
Daniels will need to continue adding to his frame. He is 6-foot-4 and was listed at 210 pounds for the 2023 season. Daniels looked bigger in 2023, but is still skinny for the quarterback position. For a quarterback that has running as a focal point of his game, he could take a beating in the NFL. Adding weight will help him sustain himself at the NFL level.
While he doesn’t have a weak arm, it isn’t the strongest either. He can push the ball downfield, but doesn’t have the velocity that other top quarterbacks have in this class. Sometimes the ball can hang in the air and other times he can throw passes that wobble, but that isn’t the norm.
Pre-snap, Daniels could show better recognition. He doesn’t always recognize where pressure is coming from and then has to improvise and use his scrambling ability. If he can shift protections or audible as a result of what he is seeing, he can set himself up more for success.
