Hysopt named top Smart Building Smart Construction Innovator at 2023 Innovation World Cup©

London, 21 december 2023 – At the 2023 Innovation World Cup© in Munich, European HVAC specialist Hysopt – short for Hydronic System Optimisation – has been recognised as one of the world’s leading Smart Building and Smart Construction Innovators. The fast-growing scale-up received the plaudits for its Hysopt BIM Syncer©, which was launched earlier this year and aims to bridge the digital divide between HVAC calculations on the one hand, and BIM modelling on the other hand. For Hysopt, the recognition follows earlier awards and accolades for its other solution, the Hysopt Optimiser©: a unique Digital Twin solution for the optimisation of large HVAC installations.

During a pitch and award ceremony at BIM World MUNICH featuring the Top 40 Smart Building and Smart Construction Innovators of 2023, chosen from a pool of more than 150 solutions representing over 50 countries, Hysopt was selected by a live jury as one of eight finalists. These Top 8 companies then competed in the Grand Pitch & Award Ceremony, again pitching to a jury who evaluated the participants based on innovation level, go-to-market approach, commercial potential, and sustainability. 

While Hysopt ultimately missed out on the podium, the recognition as one of the world’s top building and construction innovators is further credit to the potential of the scale-up, a spin-off from the University of Antwerp. 

The Hysopt BIM syncer©, a game changer in HVAC design

With the BIM Syncer technology, Hysopt aims to bridge the digital divide between the calculation of HVAC systems, and BIM (Building Information Modeling, a sort of digital 3D model of a building, including its HVAC systems), on the other hand. At present, there is little to no interaction between the two: HVAC engineers perform the calculations, while BIM engineers worry about the spatial aspects. This often leads to huge failure costs, among other things. 

Due to the lack of digital integration between HVAC and BIM, the two plans never completely match, which almost always leads to problems in the execution phase. The only way to prevent this is by manually verifying the conformity of the various elements. Not only is this extremely time-consuming; it also leaves room for errors. The Hysopt BIM syncer©, which was created based on a user feedback panel of HVAC professionals, brings both plans together in a single split-screen model that is continually validated and synchronised. As such, it is a genuine game changer in HVAC design,” states Roel Vandenbulcke (MEng), founder and CEO of Hysopt.

Complementary to the Hysopt Optimiser© 

The Hysopt BIM syncer© is an important add-on to Hysopt’s original innovation: the Hysopt Optimiser©, a unique physics-based Digital Twin solution used for the optimisation of large HVAC systems. The Digital Twin technology is used by property developers, engineering consultants, installers and facility managers in addition to their traditional CAD and BIM tools, to optimise both existing and yet-to-build HVAC installations, resulting in major savings in both energy cost, carbon emissions, and investment costs.

In just under ten years, the Hysopt Optimiser© has been deployed in 450 major HVAC optimisation projects for a variety of international customers including Befimmo, CBRE, the City of Newcastle, GSK, the London Underground, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and plenty of Belgian hospitals and universities. Across these 450 projects, ​ average savings of 30% in energy cost and 40% in CO2 emissions were realised thanks to the Hysopt software.

About Hysopt

Hysopt is a spin-off of Antwerp University founded in 2013 by Roel Vandenbulcke. The company developed a solution that was unique in the world: physics-based Digital Twin software for the optimisation of large-scale HVAC systems used in healthcare facilities, educational institutes, office and government buildings and heat grids. On average, this solution results in a 30% savings on energy bills and a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions. 

This can be achieved thanks to extensive analyses and simulations at system level, where the adage of good components, bad systems often applies: good components that are brought together in random fashion without any thought having been given to the related physical processes and dynamics. Hysopt has since grown into a company that employs a workforce of forty, with plans to expand this to sixty by the end of 2023. In addition to its headquarters in Belgium, Hysopt also has branches in the Netherlands, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom. A German branch is currently in the pipeline.
