Knecht proved to be one of the best scorers in college basketball over the last few seasons. Now he is in the 2024 NBA Draft.
Out of high school, Knecht went to Northeastern Junior College, where he spent two seasons. Then he transferred to Northern Colorado. Knecht averaged 8.9 points per game in his first season, then he improved to 20.2 points per game in 2022-2023. Last season, he transferred to Tennessee, where he put up 21.7 points per game. His play helped the Volunteers reach the Elite Eight.
Following the loss in the NCAA Tournament, Knecht declared for the 2024 NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a lottery pick.
Dalton Knecht Strengths
Knecht has solid size for a guard at the NBA level. He is over 6-foot-5 and 212 pounds. Over his time in college he has been able to fill out his frame and use muscle to his advantage. His wingspan reaches about 6-foot-9 inches. Knecht is able to use his size to his advantage, especially on the offensive end of the floor.
He is a good shooter, capable of hitting shots off the dribble or the catch. Knecht can shoot after running off screens as well. He shot 39.7 percent from 3-point range last season at Tennessee and continually improved his percentage every year. Although he does go on some cold streaks from the free-throw line, he shoots a decent 77.2 percent.
His strength helps him finish at the basket. Knecht can get downhill well and he finishes through contact well. He has the ability to finish with either hand at the rim as well, dodging defenders when needed to finish. His solid athleticism and body control helps him score at the basket.
Dalton Knecht Weaknesses
Knecht can be a defensive liability. While he can be a good team defender, he struggles in his own matchups. He doesn’t have good footspeed to keep up with other guards. Often times, when he has to guard bigger players, he struggles to match their size. Knecht will get on the floor because of his offense, not his defense.
Last season was the first he had at the D-I level where he had a positive assist-to-turnover ratio. He doesn’t have the best court vision as a passer. Knecht can make more plays for others to increase his offensive value.
Knecht is more of a straightforward driver. He won’t create much wiggle room for himself to create his own shot. When he gets downhill, he is his most effective. This might end up having him get relegated to sitting in the corner or running off screens a lot.
