Technology Recap:

Bitcoin:

  • Peter Todd posted to the Bitcoin-Dev mailing list a recommendation to add a user-chosen expiration date to addresses for silent payments

  • Dan Gould posted to the Bitcoin-Dev mailing list a draft BIP (Bitcoin Improvement Proposal) for serverless payjoin

  • Wasabi Wallet v2.0.4 was released which adds features for fee bumping via RBF (Replace-by-Fee) or CPFP (Child-pays-for-Parent). In addition, they have also provided coinjoin improvements. 

Ethereum:

  • Tim Beiko provides a full recap from the most recent All Core Devs Execution layer call. This call touched on devnet-8, issues with Lighthouse, Besu and Erigon still not on the devnet, EIP-4788, and more! 

  • Ethereum’s core Devops team shared information around devnet-8 launching! Devnet-8 is the next iteration in devnets, aimed to allow clients to fully test interoperability with the latest core specs for the upcoming Dencun upgrade. 

  • The Ethereum Foundation releases an update on their most recent Allocations for Q2 of 2023. This allocation provides funding to existing projects, entities, and more that are providing work within the community. 

  • Mike Neuder shares a new inclusion list design which was previously known as a CR (Censorship Resistant) list for ePBS (Enshrined Proposer Builder Separation). This aims to combat the free data availability problem. 

  • Josh Rudolf from R&D at the Ethereum Foundation publishes a thread on Statelessness coming to Ethereum. Statelessness allows easier syncing, more scalability and more! 

  • Prysmatic Labs has released Prysm v4.0.8! This is a recommended release which brings parallel hashing of validator entries in the beacon state, parallel validations of consensus and execution checks and much more. 

Other Chains: 

  • The Immutable zkEVM testnet is now live! The Immutable zkEVM is powered by Polygon’s zero knowledge technology. The existing ImmutableX is powered by StarkWare’s. 

  • Offchain Labs, the team behind Arbitrum, has announced that they have made it easier to now launch Arbitrum Orbit AnyTrust chains! This provides the building of a layer-3 blockchain that enables any EVM-compatible smart contracts on top of Arbitrum. 

  • Liquity provides an update on Oracles and how they are selected for Liquity V2. 

  • Gnosis, now known as Safe, introduces the Safe(Core) Protocol whitepaper which focuses on advancing the transition to smart accounts. 

  • CoW Swap has integrated TWAP orders (a.k.a Time Weighted Average Price orders) into their protocol. TWAP orders let users split their trades over time. It is available in Safe-powered wallets today. 

  • Bartek from L2Beat provides a full thread on Eigen Layer and what is actually deployed on mainnet

  • Connext announces the next chapter in cross-chain innovation and when their token will airdrop. 

  • Loopring announces their new Developer Portal. This now includes all docs and guides for developers to easily integrate Loopring products.  

  • Gitcoin Grants 18 is now live! GG18 is an opportunity for people to discover the next great web3 project, support existing projects that you believe in as well as get donations multiplied via matching funds. 

  • Operation Solar Staker is now live on mainnet! This is facilitated by the ether.fi team. 

  • Fire Wallet is announced! This will be an all-in-one solution for making transactions more readable within a wallet itself. No need to integrate with MetaMask. 

  • Diva completed the first Initial Distribution of DIVA DAO. This is a major step forward towards decentralizing Liquid Staking. With this the DIVA DAO is now live.

  • Dan Romero of Farcaster shares that they are a step closer to 100% permissionless. 

  • Scroll has launched their Beta phase on the Sepolia testnet. This is the final stage before mainnet launch and brings with it zkEVM upgrades and Bridge upgrades. 

  • Dan Romero also shares that Farcaster is making the move to OP mainnet! Many of their existing users and developers are building on the OP Stack, thus it makes sense for them to move towards it with the addition of Base and Zora on OP as well. 

  • Kofi introduces a Rollup Economic Spells dashboard on Dune which gives a full dataset covering the on-chain costs and revenues of all layer-2 networks. 


Hacks | Vulnerabilities | Exploits:

  • Immunefi shares information on common cross-chain bridge vulnerabilities. 

  • Nikolaos Makriyannis and Oren Yomtov publish a paper on Practical Key-Extraction Attacks in Leading MPC Wallets

  • On August 16, 2023 Shibarium launched but fell into a pending state with ~$1.8M in crypto funds being locked

  • As of August 21, 2023 there was a database leak that exposed 101,183 people’s addresses that are connected with the friend.tech platform. 

  • TRM provides insights into North Korea’s crypto heists with a total of ~$200M stolen in just 2023.

  • BNB Chain exploiter was liquidated for $30M on Venus Protocol.  


Mainstream Recap:

  • Coinbase is increasing its support for stablecoins with an investment in Circle. Previously, Coinbase supported USDC by being part of the Centre Consortium with Circle. In addition, they announced USDC will be launching on 6 new blockchains. 

  • Circle announces that USDC will launch natively on mainnet for Base, Cosmos, NEAR, Optimism, Polkadot and Polygon in September. 

  • The National Futures Association, a CFTC designated SRO, has approved Coinbase Financial Markets as a registered Futures Commission Merchant. 

  • Bill Hughes, an attorney at ConsenSys, shares an update on the related TornadoCash suit involving Van Loon v. Dept. of Treasury

  • Coinbase launches standwithcrypto.org as a way to push crypto advocacy!

  • Chairman Patrick McHenry releases clarity around the Payment Stablecoins Act of 2023. The bill establishes a regulatory framework for payment stablecoins. As stated, “digital assets which an issuer must redeem for a fixed monetary value”
