Williams spent just one year at Colorado, but impressed. Now he is following his brother Jalen to the NBA by entering the 2024 draft.
As a five-star recruit out of Arizona, Williams signed with Colorado. Williams dealt with injuries during his freshman year, but was able to play in 24 games. He averaged 11.9 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. The Buffaloes made the 2024 NCAA Tournament, but lost in the second round.
Following the NCAA Tournament exit, Williams declared for the 2024 NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a mid-first-round pick.
Cody Williams Strengths
Williams has solid height and length for an NBA wing. He stands over 6-foot-6 and has a wingspan of over 7 feet. The impressive thing about his height and length is that he has good athleticism to go with it. He has nice body control and can be tough to match up with his blend of size and athleticism.
This past season at Colorado, Williams showed he can be a good shooter. He shot over 40 percent from 3-point range. With his size, this will help him space out the floor. He’ll need to take more than the 1.7 he took per game to prove he really has improved as a shooter.
He can be a real asset on defense. Williams can provide good ball pressure with his size and athleticism. He doesn’t produce a lot of stats, but can shut down opponents. Williams is useful in switching situations, as he can guard multiple positions.
Cody Williams Weaknesses
Williams needs to add weight to his frame to fill it out. He weighs 178.4 pounds, which is extremely light for his size. In the NBA, he can be overpowered by bigger players. It might take a season or two for him to add the necessary weight to really match up.
While his ability to handle the ball is good, he struggles with turning the ball over. He had a negative assist-to-turnover ratio in his one season at Colorado. Williams needs to play less recklessly and protect the ball if he is going to be trusted as a point forward.
With his shooting being solid from deep at Colorado, there are still some concerns. Williams wasn’t a great shooter before Colorado. He also hits just 71.4 percent of his free throws. He’ll have to prove that he can knock down shots to help him see the floor more.
