About ILUS 2023
The biennial International Land Use Symposium (ILUS) brings together leading academics in the fields of GIScience and spatial planning. The objective of the interdisciplinary conference is to advance the understanding of built-up areas and to develop new ideas for sustainable urbanization. ILUS brings together leading international academics and interested attendees for presentation, discussion, and collaborative networking in the fields of spatial sciences, environmental studies, geography, cartography, GIScience, urban planning, architecture, which relate to investigations of settlements and infrastructure.

Previous ILUS conferences in Dresden (Germany), Paris (France) and Haifa (Israel) have seen excellent participation from the international scientific community to advance the concepts of sustainable urbanization.

Theme – ILUS 2023

Under the umbrella of the thematic area, ‘Urban Analytics for Transforming Cities and Regions‘, ILUS 2023 is dedicated to give answers to the question how interdisciplinary concepts in spatial analysis and data modelling can contribute and support sustainable urban and regional development. To this end, the symposium covers the major topics: Urban Dynamics, Resilient urban and regional systems and Open data in planning and urban management. In addition, contributions can be submitted in an open category if their topical focus is indirectly related to major topics of the symposium. The symposium encourages original contributions with the goal of advancing knowledge on urban dynamics towards sustainability in the Global South and Global North.

We therefore encourage interdisciplinary contributions that show the heterogeneous applicability of urban analytics, in particular geospatial data, analysis, modeling and simulation for a transition towards sustainable urban and regional systems. Contributions may be theoretical, methodological, or applied in nature.

Call for Abstracts – OPEN NOW!
The organizing committee is pleased to invite abstracts of no more than 500 words, to be submitted using the submission link below, on or before 30th June 2023:

https://ilus2023.ioer.info/call-for-abstracts

They should refer to the following thematic strands:

  1. Urban dynamics: global perspectives on structures and dynamics of cities, trajectories of cities towards sustainability, urban models for urban transformation, urban sprawl, densification, suburbanisation, cities as complex systems, urban spatial networks and accessibility, and spatiotemporal big data.
  2. Resilient urban and regional systems: urban planning and climate change adaptation with a focus on urban heat island, land policies, benefits of green and blue infrastructures, energy transition, renewable energies and energy efficiency, smart city models, socio-spatial inequalities.
  3. Open data in planning and urban management: open data portals, geodata infrastructures, governmental open data initiatives, co-production of geodata, citizen science, participatory approaches, data literacy in urban planning
  4. Various: This topic contains free contributions whose topical focus is indirectly related.

We also want to emphasize the possibility of poster presentations across all thematic strands. Please select “Submission for Posters“, if you prefer this option.

Abstracts will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee of ILUS 2023. Accepted abstracts will be presented as oral presentations and be published in the digital conference proceedings.

Publication of Full Papers
Selected post-conference full papers will be eligible for submission to thematic special issues of the journals Buildings and Cities and Journal of Geovisualization and Spatial Analysis.

Any questions regarding the submission and publication process should be addressed to ilus2023@mail.ioer.de
