Would It Be Better to Play Mass Effect Instead of Starfield?

Date:

Bethesda’s AAA space exploration title Starfield has finally been released to the public. After a few hours after launch, the title has seen pretty moderate reviews from different gaming outlets. Most of the criticism has been placed upon how Starfield is underwhelming. Another statement being made is that Starfield is a lesser version of the critically acclaimed BioWare game Mass Effect. So would it be better to play Mass Effect instead of Starfield?

Starfield and Mass Effect Are Two Different Games

It’s common practice in the gaming industry for games to take inspiration from each other. Time and time again this practice has been done and sometimes it works and at times it doesn’t. However, just because inspiration was found somewhere else doesn’t mean a title lacks originality. It should go without saying that Mass Effect and Starfield are two different games. Sure they both are in the space RPG genre, but there are major differences that make them special.

Mass Effect Is More Narrative-Focused Than Starfield

When looking at the Mass Effect series, each game has played more of a narrative-focused objective by not only capturing players through gameplay but primarily through the story. While Starfield has an in-depth story as well, compared to Mass Effect it’s not as fleshed out and only scratches the surface. What it does focus on however is the planet exploration aspect of the game and making new discoveries. It provides more of a space flight experience compared to Mass Effect’s boots-on-the-ground exposure.

Starfield Is Less ”Hand Holding” than Mass Effect

Startfield pretty much throws players into a “slow burn” as the title has a slow start and lacks a tutorial feature to walk players through what they’re supposed to do. Compared to Mass Effect it’s less streamlined and gives more access to player freedom. Whether this is a great idea is completely up to the player. Mass Effects lakes this aspect it doesn’t provide much in terms of exploring different planets.

Both Games Have Their Charms

What game is better than the other is completely based on what exactly a player is looking for in their space RPG experience. Do they want to save the galaxy from certain doom while making allies along the way, or do they want to explore everything that space has to offer while fighting off foes? Once that answer is found, you’ll know which AAA title to play.
