A Walkerville home has been a source of great pleasure for its current owner for two decades, and is now ready to be enjoyed to its fullest.

Etelka and her late husband John bought the 1890-built home at 19 Wilsden St 20 years ago, with Etelka saying how they came to own it was nothing short of serendipity.

“We were living in Devonshire St – which is parallel to Wilsden St – and I play bridge,” she says.

“One of my bridge partners lives at Murray Bridge but when it was her turn to host her mother would go out so we could play bridge here at Wilsden St.

“About five years before we bought it I told her that when John and I scaled down – because we had half an acre of gardens where we were – we could see ourselves being very happy in this home, because I had always loved coming here.

“One day out of the blue she called me and said ‘Mum’s decided to move, are you really interested?’.

“In the meantime, our back neighbours on Church Tce – who had five children and have made lots of offers on our home in the past when we weren’t interested in selling – gave us another offer two days after we found out this place would be for sale, so in one week we bought and sold.”

Etelka and her late husband have since renovated the home throughout, and it now offers up to five bedrooms – or three and a living room and separate sitting room – a kitchen, a formal dining room, a formal living room, a combined bathroom and laundry, and a light-filled living area.

A pavilion sits among the gardens in the landscaped rear yard, and the property also has two sheds, two veranda areas and a double carport.

Etelka says the work they have done to the home and garden has made it a grand entertainer indeed.

“We did a lot of entertaining and I’ve had 20 here for sit down meals, and the outdoor kitchen pavilion has made hosting parties a breeze,” she says.

“I love hosting people here for bridge and it really has been a very happy home.”

Now moving to a smaller home still in Walkerville on St Andrews St, Etelka says it is time for someone else to love 19 Wilsden St as they have.

“It would be a great downsizer,” she says.

“Friends loved coming here, so I will be sad to leave but I’m very much looking forward to my new chapter.

“I love everything about Walkerville and I get so much pleasure from looking at the house and gardens, and it’s a really safe suburb to walk in too.

“Everything you need is close by, from good schools to shops and cafes – it’s got everything.”

The home will be auctioned at 11am on Saturday, March 2.
