Get back to nature in an Unley Park home that blurs the boundaries between the indoors and the outdoors.

Vendors Shona and Kym bought the property at 10 Whistler Ave in 2016 – seven years later, they’ve listed it for sale with a $5.5m to $5.75m price guide.

The home needed no attention when they bought it but it had a grass tennis court Shona saw as the perfect blank canvas upon which to create her masterpiece – a stunningly curated roomed garden.

“I had always wanted to build a garden from scratch with several different subsections or rooms, and it offered that scope,” Shona says.

“My vision was to create a sense of mystery, where you could walk into one section of the garden and enjoy that and walk through a gate and see a whole different little area, and then from there head into a different type of garden altogether.

“There are so many different styles of garden and I wanted to incorporate all of them here.

“I particularly wanted water in there and took a lot of inspiration from the Adelaide Himeji Garden.

“I designed it myself but I gave it to a landscape architect who specialises in garden rooms to bring it to life, and it took three years to create.

“It’s really nice to see people’s reactions to it.”

While the couple have left the home largely as it was when they bought it, they have made some improvements, including adding double glazing, a solar system with a battery, a security system and changing halogen lights over to LED ones.

“We’ve made it a lot more environmentally friendly,” Shona says.

“The home was beautifully renovated before we bought it and the owner was seemingly as obsessive as I am – we could see that in the quality of the work that was done.”

Sitting on an 1859sq m allotment, the home offers 551sq m of indoor and outdoor living space and has five bedrooms, two bathrooms and numerous spacious formal and casual living areas.

With the couple now downsizing, Shona says it is time for a family to call their property home.

“There are just the two of us here and it needs a family to fill it – plus kids absolutely adore the garden as there are so many areas to explore,” she says.

“The location is amazing too – we can walk to the Hyde Park shops and restaurants, which is lovely, and we’re close to everywhere we need to be.

“Plus it’s such a leafy suburb and the birdlife here is simply incredible.

“It’s like living in the country while still being close to everything.”
