Spotlight on Johnston Public Schools: Supporting Students in Special Education
Last week, our Instructional Equity Partners Heidi Vazquez and Vera De Jesus represented Throughline Learning at the Johnston Public Schools Special Services Open House. The event was an opportunity to welcome all special education teachers back to school, connect with partner organizations, and begin action planning for the year ahead. We were excited to introduce Johnston teachers to our new brand and showcase the impact our services had last year.
Our partnership specifically focuses on promoting productive struggle, self-directed learning, and access to high-quality curriculum for students in special education. Over the course of 2022-2023:
Johnston elementary students in special education achieved higher levels of growth in STAR reading than their regular education peers, increasing high growth rates by 10 percentage points, and significantly decreasing the percentage of students in the low growth category (by 19 percentage points). Additionally, elementary students in special education increased their reading proficiency by 9 percentage points.
We are so proud of the incredible Johnston educator community for their commitment to this important work and the great gains they’re seeing in both student experiences and achievement. The open house — full of music, fun swag, and photo booth snaps — started our SY24 relationship off on a great note. Thank you to Edda Carmadello, Director of Special Services, for inviting us to be part of such a wonderful event!
