Even with the absence of E3 2020 in June developers still had projects they wanted to share, which included Fast Travel Games and its horror title Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife. With only a teasing glimpse offered at the time, for Gamescom this week the studio has released a lot more information including a gameplay trailer, screenshots, headset support and release window.
Set in the World of Darkness universe, Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife looks like it won’t be your average horror experience because you’re going to play a wraith. As you’re dead you’ll have access to supernatural powers which grow over time such as ‘Insubstantiality’ so you can walk through walls, ‘Wraithgrasp’ with which you can manipulate distant objects and ‘Sharpened Senses’ for tracking other spirits and hearing distant whispers.
All useful skills to help you explore the sprawling Barclay Mansion which has a terrifying history. You’ll need to uncover the reason why you died, as a wraith you’re stuck between worlds so you’ll need to find clues in the mansion. But this is a horror videogame after all, so where are the scares if you’re a wraith?
Well, also wandering the building are apparitions and sinister Spectres following your every move. They all have their own backstory and connection to the bigger mystery but they need to be avoided for some unknown reason. So stealth needs to be employed to stay hidden, climbing into lockers or using other environmental features to stay out of sight.
This will be the first time in World of Darkness’ history that players will be able to become the wraith. Entering the Shadowlands, a reflection of the daylight world where the dead walk side by side with the living, completely unseen.
Fast Travel Games has confirmed that Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife will be released in early 2021, supporting most headsets including Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift/Rift S, HTC Vive, Valve Index and PlayStation VR. Oculus Quest and Rift will also feature cross-buy support.
