The Acolyte is set 100 years before the Star Wars prequel trilogy, following a Jedi killing spree.

A new trailer for Disney+’s latest Star Wars TV series The Acolyte has been released, giving viewers a first look at the show before it starts streaming on June 4. The Acolyte is rather unique compared to recent Star Wars fare, as it’s set in the final days of the High Republic era – roughly 100 years before the events of the Star Wars prequel trilogy. This places the series in the golden age of the Jedi, shortly before things start to go awry.

New The Acolyte trailer unveils a Star Wars mystery-thriller

The Acolyte is the latest entry in the Star Wars franchise, set in an era never before seen in live-action. The High Republic was first introduced as a media series consisting of comicbooks and novels, but it was later used as a key part of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s story campaign. This is the most removed a Star Wars live-action production has been from the Skywalker Saga too, making it a pretty refreshing entry for anyone tired of the same old setting and characters.

The series’ logline reads:

An investigation into a shocking crime spree pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Amandla Stenberg). As more clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems.

The trailer however, begins with a Jedi played by Carrie-Anne Moss doing her best to survive an attempted murder in a cantina. The assassin is then pursued by a group of Jedi from the High Republic, though they are seemingly picked off in various parts of the galaxy before a few of them finally confront the assassin head-on. At the end of the trailer, we see the assassin easily outpower all of them with a red lightsaber and a powerful demonstration of the Force.

The series stars Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman and Joonas Suotamo. Russian Doll co-creator Leslye Headland is showrunning and executive producing the series. This is just one of many Star Wars projects currently in production, among which are The Mandalorian and Grogu movie, Ahsoka Season 2 and Andor Season 2.
