Mick Jagger’s Chicken Noodles

Date:

Saturday afternoon. My daughters have a playdate at home with one of their friends. Dinner is missing, or rather, what the girls want for dinner is missing. I have no desire to go out. After a morning spent in the garden, nursing a sore shoulder, all I want is a painkiller and rest. But I can’t. The chicken noodles cooked with our recipe are in demand. I muster up my strength and overcome inertia by putting on my headphones.

Podcasts are a passion of mine. I click play and automatically start the episode of Uncensored CMO, a podcast on “the good, the bad and quite frankly downright ugly truth about marketing.” This episode’s guest is one of the characters who intrigues me the most because he has a story to tell. And then we share, even if he can’t know it, a common passion, for the work of Daniel Kahneman. I am talking about Scott Galloway, Professor of Marketing at NYU Stern School of Business and host of the Prof G and Pivot podcasts.

On the way back, Jon Evans, Uncensored CMO’s host, asks the question: in your opinion, what is the most important skill you might see lacking in a marketer at the moment? Prof G replies: storytelling, the ability to take a concept and communicate it compellingly across different mediums. Learn to write, learn to present, learn to stand in front of an audience and present, Learn to write texts. Some people can summarize a situation funnily in just eight words. Find a medium you excel at. He admits he’s not great at one-on-one, but he is great at standing in front of an audience. It is important to figure out where your strength lies, he argues, but storytelling is the key.

Then he mentions Mick Jagger as an example of an outstanding storyteller. We need people who know how to communicate across mediums. I think that’s the key. I wait in the car for the end of the episode. After all, I wouldn’t have anything to tell once back home. Hence this post.
