Liquid, FURIA lead after IEM Fall NA opening day

Date:

Day one of IEM Fall North America has come to an end, giving us an early look at how the group standings are shaping up for the final NA Regional Major Ranking event where everything is on the line for the 12 competing teams.

Liquid and FURIA were the only teams to go undefeated on the first day of play, sitting atop their respective groups following rather clear-cut wins in their opening matches. Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo and company recovered from an early deficit against Bad News Bears before easing past ATK, while FURIA came out on top of a domestic match-up against GODSENT before making similarly short work of Triumph.

Liquid hold a 2-0 record in Group A after the first day of IEM Fall NA

Among the first set of notable results was Extra Salt narrowly surviving a comeback effort from paiN. Despite holding a dominant 12-3 lead at the end of their CT side effort, it wasn’t until overtime that Extra Salt were able to close things out, led by a strong individual showing from Justin “FaNg” Coakley.

Unfortunately for Johnny “JT” Theodosiou‘s side, they were unable to maintain momentum into their following match against Bad News Bears, resulting in a loss which leaves their group wide open.

Michael “Swisher” Schmid rebounded from a dismal showing in his team’s opening match, combining with Paytyn “junior” Johnson to help secure a crucial win keeping Bad News Bears in the running for a top five finish in the tournament.

Evil Geniuses‘ matches marked the return of Peter “stanislaw” Jarguz to the team’s roster for the first time in three months after the Canadian took an extended break, last recording an official for the team in July. They seemed in hot form as they kicked off the event in style, dismantling 00Nation 16-5 on Mirage.

However, EG faltered in their subsequent showing against TeamOne, mustering only five rounds of their own as the Brazilian team picked them apart on Inferno. With GODSENT also netting a win over 00Nation at the end of the day, EG reside in the middle of Group B as part of a four-way tie, which they’ll need to fight their way out of in subsequent matches if they hope to make the PGL Stockholm Major.

Another notable team to suffer a loss was over in Group A, where EXTREMUM were handed a 16-7 defeat on Vertigo by paiN. The Brazilian side ran rampant over the defenses of Aaron “AZR” Ward‘s troops, who only have an early win over ATK to console themselves with, and can only hope to show a better face against Liquid and Extra Salt on day two.
