France 2022: About hydrogen powered vehicles

Date:

In France, the publication “Baromètre des flottes et de la mobilité 2022” by l’Arval Mobility Observatory indicated more enthusiasm for hybrid and rechargeable hybrid vehicle models than for electric models. This is because charging takes time.

In this context, manufacturers have focused on a new fuel: hydrogen.

More precisely, electric motor vehicles whose battery is recharged while the vehicle is in motion, thanks to a fuel cell powered by a pressurized hydrogen tank. This gas is traditionally produced from fossil fuels. And more recently by electrolysis of water, using renewable energy sources. In other words, CO2 emissions remain zero. Also, refilling a hydrogen tank takes a few minutes only.

Examples of hydrogen passenger vehicles. The Hyundai Nexo has a range of 400 km on the highway at 130 km/h. But it still comes at a hefty price: €80,400. The Toyota Miraï, on the market for a longer time, has a new version with a range of 650 km. And prices start to drop: €67,900. Also BMW is testing a hydrogen iX5 (275 kW).

Examples of commercial hydrogen vehicles: ë-Jumpy Hydrogen by Citroën, Vivaro e-Hydrogen by Opel and Renault, which joined forces with the American Plug Power to create a joint venture Hyvia, which already sells three versions of the Master H2-TECH: a van, a VUC chassis and a minibus. Hyvia also offers to install hydrogen charging stations for its customers.
