After a solid career at Maryland, Banks has risen throughout the last few months of the draft process. He is now preparing for the 2023 NFL Draft.

Out of high school, Banks was a three-star prospect who decided to stay in-state to play for Maryland. Banks started eight games as a freshman, tallying 28 tackles, one interception and two passes defended. Maryland struggled with a 3-9 record that season. In 2020, Banks played all five of Maryland’s games, registering 11 tackles and a pass defended. The Terrapins won two of their five games that season. He played just two games during the 2021 season before having a season-ending injury. Banks returned in 2022 for the Terps. He had 38 total tackles, one interception and eight passes defended. His play led Maryland to an 8-5 record.

Following the season, Banks decided to forego his remaining eligibility and enter the 2023 NFL Draft. He is projected to be a first-round pick.

Deonte Banks Strengths

Banks is great in man-to-man coverage. He can press or play off-man coverage and find success. In press, he can reroute wide receivers and throw them off their routes. Regardless of how he is aligning, he can mirror and match a receiver’s route. Banks should be trusted with man to man matchups at the NFL level.

He also has had success in zone coverage. Banks demonstrates good eye balance between the quarterback and receivers. He also shows good spatial awareness in zone coverage. Banks can pass off receivers between zones and is a good teammate with his communication.

His athleticism is among the best in the class. He has good play speed, which was confirmed at the NFL Combine. Banks also has fluid hips, with the ability to change directions quickly. He has good acceleration and is an explosive athlete.

Deonte Banks Weaknesses

Banks can continue to work on his ball skills. He lacked ball production for the majority of his career at Maryland. Banks had just two career interceptions and 11 passes defended. He needs to show better anticipation and then attack the catch point more aggressively to be more productive.

His run support and tackling can improve to make him a more complete corner. He could fight harder to shed blocks and to contain runs to the inside. Once the play comes near him, he is just an average tackler and needs to make sure to finish plays with a good form tackle.

In his coverage, Banks can get turned around too much. What makes it worse is that he struggles when his back is turned to the quarterback. He can be fooled by double moves and needs to stay attached to receivers with good technique.
