Boston Dynamics is suing competitor Ghost Robotics for multiple patent infringements.
The complaint, filed in Delaware federal court on Nov. 11, says Ghost Robotics’ Vision 60 and Spirit 40 robot dog design encroaches on seven patents for “core technology” related to Boston Dynamics’ Spot quadruped robot.
“Boston Dynamics’ early success with the Spot robot did not go unnoticed by competitors in the robotics industry, including Ghost Robotics,” the suit reads. “…Defendant has deliberately continued to infringe in a wanton, malicious, and egregious manner, with reckless disregard for Boston Dynamics’ patent rights.”
The reported similarities include both physical appearance and operational design of the robot dogs, including the capability to stabilize itself using one of its legs to push against the ground, allowing it to roll onto its back or stomach, as well as the ability to climb stairs.

The filing reportedly follows Boston Dynamics’ request in 2020 for Ghost Robotics to review Spot-related patents, five months after the launch of the Spirit 40, as well as several cease and desist letters. The suit requests the court to award unspecified damages for the alleged infringements.
“Defendant’s wrongful conduct has caused and will continue to cause Boston Dynamics to suffer irreparable harm resulting from the loss of its lawful patent right to exclude others from making, using, selling, offering to sell, and/or importing Boston Dynamics’ patented inventions,” the suit said. “On information and belief, Defendant will continue to infringe the…patent unless permanently enjoined by the Court.”
