Thompson decided to play in the Overtime Elite League after high school instead of college. He is now in the 2023 NBA Draft.

After playing a few years of high school basketball Thompson joined Overtime Elite for the 2021-2022 season. He averaged 20.1 points, 9.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists per 40 minutes. He returned for the 2022-2023 season before he was eligible to turn pro. Thompson averaged 16.4 points, 5.9 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game during the season.

Following two years with Overtime Elite, Thompson has declared for the 2023 NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a top 5 pick.

Amen Thompson Strengths

Thompson is a great playmaker. He is able to push the ball in transition and get to the basket for himself or dish it off to a teammate for an open basket. In the same way, Thompson can run the pick and roll, while finding ways to score for himself or set up teammates. In the half-court, Thompson is able to show good enough ball handling to get to the basket or pull up from the mid-range with enough space to score.

His athleticism paired with his size make him a unique prospect for the point guard position. He stands at 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds. While he’ll need to add weight to his frame, he has a good starting point for the NBA, especially given his 6-foot-9 wingspan. To go with his good size for the perimeter, Thompson can run the floor and is able to finish at the rim because of his athleticism.

There is potential for Thompson to be a very good defender at the NBA level. He has the size and wingspan on the perimeter, but has also shown that he can move his feet and stay in front of drivers. Thompson can be versatile on the defensive end of the floor, as he can guard multiple positions. He has shown a knack for jumping passing lanes and coming up with steals.

Amen Thompson Weaknesses

Thompson will need to continue to work on his shot, which includes his 3-point shooting and free throw shooting. He shot 25 percent from deep this past season in the Overtime Elite League. Defenders can sag off of him for the time being, which will make it harder for him to get to the basket. He needs to work on shooting off the catch and the dribble. He shot just 65.6 percent from the free throw line, which will make it easy for teams to foul him on his way to the basket, knowing he doesn’t often convert on both free throws.

He will need to continue to add strength to his frame. At 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds, opposing teams can put wings that are way stronger on him. The team that drafts him will need to get him to put on 15-20 pounds of muscle as fast as possible to help him hold up.

His playing in the Overtime Elite League makes him a wildcard. Thompson did not play the best competition and the league hasn’t proven to develop prospects at a high level yet. The adjustment of playing against players in that league and players in the NBA will take some time.

Projected Draft Range: Top Five Pick
