The popular VR golf game GOLF+ is adding AI caddies powered by the same technology behind ChatGPT.
Unless you’ve been living in a bomb shelter over the past few months, you know that it’s only a matter of time until our artificial intelligence (AI) overlords decide to rebel and enslave humanity. Seemingly magical programs such as ChatGPT and Midjourney are already changing the way we work today and the technology shows no signs of slowing down.
Even VR developers are finding new and unique ways to incorporate AI into their games and apps. This includes GolfScope Inc., who this week announced a new AI golf caddy coming to GOLF+ on Meta Quest VR headsets.
Powered by the same technology behind the ChatGPT AI chatbot and Google Bard, Arthur is a virtual golf tender and “the most charming caddie in town”; his words. Based on a video by GOLF+ CEO Ryan Engle, Arthur is capable of designing custom-putting challenges and practice rounds based on your preferences. All you have to do is tell Arthur what you’re looking for, such as putt distance and terrain, and he automatically generates the environment and scenario.
The nifty virtual attendant even remembers your name and uses it regularly throughout your conversations, adding an additional layer of personality. According to Engle, you can even complain to Arthur about your poor performance, and he’ll complain right back. Now THAT is what I call the future.
That said, the feature does feature its fair share of limitations. Arthur is not able to generate full courses (yet) and there is a slight delay in the responses. Overall, however, this is an incredible use-case for AI technology and one that I could see taking off with VR developers in the future. Imagine a full-scale role-playing experience with non-playable characters that deliver detailed, personalized responses to the player.
There’s no word yet on an official release date for Arthur, the most charming caddie in town, though we can expect several follow-up videos in the near future according to Engle.
