Believe it or not, it’s true. In the latest WWE 2K24 gameplay trailer, it was revealed that heavyweight boxing legend Muhammad Ali will be entering the WWE ropes this year as a playable character.

In a surprise unveiling near the end of the trailer, for a split-second, we get a glimpse of Ali – who many consider the greatest boxer of all time and one of the biggest cultural icons of the 20th century – shadowboxing in the ring in his patented white shorts.

This will now be the second sports sim Ali has been a part of in the last six months. The pugilistic legend also recently appeared in EA Sports UFC 5 as a featured fighter, alongside likes of other icons such as Bruce Lee and Mike Tyson. And with the UFC and WWE recently merging under one roof, it is perhaps not so surprising to see Ali pop up in both games as a bonus character.

Most people probably don’t know this, but Muhammad Ali was actually a part of the very first WrestleMania main event back in 1985. Ali participated as a special guest referee in a match that featured Mr. T and Hulk Hogan against Roddy Piper and ‘Mr. Wonderful’ Paul Orndorff.

It wasn’t visible in the trailer if this particular match will actually be playable or not, but as the trailer highlighted the ‘40 Years of WrestleMania Showcase’ mode, it might be safe to assume that it will be.

The release of WWE 2K24 is now just one month away, with the game hitting the Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, as well the PS4 and Xbox One on March 8. Some of the other new features and modes set to be included are the casket match, ambulance match, and special guest referee match.

In addition to this, pre-ordered copies of any edition of the game will also grant players access to the Nightmare Family Pack, which includes four extra playable characters and three gold-tier MyFACTION cards.

With the WWE 2K franchise enjoying somewhat of a resurgence in fanfare and quality improvement over its last couple of editions, all early-access reviews and hands-on previews have indicated that this first-rate quality continues in WWE 2K24, with some further tweaks and quality-of-life improvements also added this year for good measure.
