Available now on consoles and PC, Shadow Warrior 3 is the latest entry in the fast-paced first-person shooter series that doesn’t take itself seriously. After Shadow Warrior 2 tried to change the formula a little, Shadow Warrior 3 goes backs to basics, delivering a linear campaign that’s more focused and hair-raising then ever before. And that might have a bearing on the difficulty you choose to play it on.
There are three difficulty levels available in Shadow Warrior 3 – Easy, Normal and Hard. Often feeling like a mash-up between DOOM Eternal and Ghostrunner, you need to think on your feet, be selective about which enemies you prioritise, and manage your health and ammo levels to succeed. Needless to say, even on Easy the game’s not a walkover.

Still, gamers familiar with first-person shooters should probably try to tackle Shadow Warrior 3 on Normal difficulty, where they’ll be challenged but not frustratingly so. Death might occur now and again, but a solid checkpoint systems means there’s never a great deal of progress lost – you’ll generally just start back at the beginning of your current firefight.
Being a fairly short game, however, some of those seeking to get all the gameplay they can out of Shadow Warrior 3 might want to play on Hard difficulty. Upgrading Wang and his weapons effectively is a must on Hard difficulty, and so is making use of the Finisher system and the traps often found in arenas. It’s very challenging, but ultimately more rewarding.
We should note though, that there are no difficulty-related trophies or achievements in Shadow Warrior 3. And so, if you find yourself having a hard time, feel free to turn the difficulty down to Easy. You might even want to do that if you don’t care about trophies or achievements, too. You’ve paid for the game, after all – just have fun with it!
