Walmart to Open 150+ Large-Format Stores Across the U.S.

Date:

American retail giant Walmart announced January 31 that it is planning to build or convert over 150 large-format stores across the U.S. over the next five years.

According to CNBC, the company will expand some smaller sites into Supercenters with additional plans to open many new locations, said Walmart spokesperson Josh Havens.

“We plan to build new stores in a way that we have not done in many years,” another Walmart spokesperson.

Walmart did not reveal how much the expansion project will cost or where the new stores will be located.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Walmart told employees in a staff memo that it is hoping to open 12 new stores in 2024 while converting one smaller location into a Walmart Supercenter. Walmart president and CEO John Furner also said that the company will remodel 650 stores over the next 12 months across 47 states and Puerto Rico.

“These efforts represent millions of dollars in capital investment of labor, supplies and tax revenue, which benefit their respective communities,” said Furner in a January 31 statement. “And they’ll help us reach and serve even more customers.”

Walmart already operates over 4,600 stores in the U.S., including almost 600 Sam’s Club warehouses. With roughly 1.6 million employees nationwide, Walmart is the biggest private employer in the country.
