Angola joins DESIGNclass and expands TMClass coverage

On 30 October, 2023, the National Institute of Industrial Property of Angola (IAPI-AO) joined DESIGNclass, the biggest database for product indications, and started using and accepting list of terms from the European Union Intellectual Property Office’s (EUIPO’s) harmonised database of product indications (HDBPI) in DESIGNclass. Additionally, Angola will now utilise the HDBPI for trademarks classification in TMClass, the biggest database for trademark classification.

Canada to implement changes to trademark opposition time limits

On 2 November 2023, the Canadian Intellectual Property Office announced upcoming modifications in the Trademarks Opposition Board’s (TMOB’s) practices, specifically in the practices pertaining to trademark opposition and section 45 proceedings.

Individual fees under Madrid Protocol revised for Lao PDR

Based on the provisions of the Common Regulations under the Madrid Agreement and Protocol Concerning the International Registration of Marks, the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization on 27 October 2023 notified the revised individual fees payable when the Lao People’s Democratic Republic is designated in an international application or in an application for renewal of international registration or is a subject of subsequent designation.

Under the provisions of the Common Regulations under the Madrid Agreement and Protocol Concerning the International Registration of Marks, the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization on 9 November 2023 notified the revised individual fees applicable when Australia is designated in an international application or in an application for renewal of international registration or is a subject of subsequent designation.

Saudi Arabia adopts 12th Edition of Nice Classification

To ensure that all trademark examiners follow uniform standards and all examinations for similarity of goods or services are conducted in accordance with uniform rules, the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) adopted the 12th edition of the International Classification of Goods and Services for the Purposes of the Registration of Marks (Nice Classification) with effect from 2 November 2023.
