Tesla Builds Safety Page To Defend Its Record. Let’s Share It.

Published

on

Tesla just added a new page to its website, and it focuses on vehicle safety for all of the company’s vehicles. This definitely makes sense in normal times, but in a time when The Church of Automotive Safety, mainstream media, and some government agencies are raising safety concerns, it makes even more sense for the company to get this information out there.

The Safety Page

The page is laid out like most of the vehicle advertising pages on the website. It starts out with an eye-catching video, but this time it shows Tesla’s workers performing safety testing. From 3D scanning with a laser device to crashing the vehicle into a barricade, they want us to know that Tesla spends a lot of time and money on making sure the vehicles are safe.

Below that, there’s an opportunity to see Tesla’s full safety report, next to images of Tesla vehicles being prepared for crash testing. “Tesla vehicles are engineered to be the safest in the world. Each one combines powerful onboard technology with an all-electric design to help protect every driver, passenger and pedestrian on the road,” the page says.

The next section introduces the vehicle design efforts that go into making the vehicles crash safe. They point out that the battery pack keeps the vehicle’s center of gravity low, potentially reducing rollover accidents. They also show imagery of impact protection, structural integrity, and crumple zones.

In the next two sections, they introduce the vehicle’s computer hardware and software that enables active safety features. They talk about the array of cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and how these give the computer awareness of the environment surrounding the vehicle. They then discuss how the software enables features like automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind spot warning, and lane departure avoidance.

They then explain that the safety features are designed to improve after the sale. Over-the-air software updates allow the company to improve the features the vehicle already has as well as introduce more safety features in the future.

Next, they mention that the battery pack is designed to provide thermal protection to occupants in the worst collisions that damage the battery pack (and set it on fire) and go through the safety ratings and awards their vehicles have achieved.

Finally, they again invite readers to read the company’s safety report for more detailed information.

The Safety Report

The safety report itself goes into a lot more detail about the things introduced on the flashier Safety page, or directs readers to other pages with greater detail.

The other things on the safety report is year-by-year information about accidents and fires. For example, the company’s data from the fourth quarter of 2020 reveals:

“In the 4th quarter, we registered one accident for every 3.45 million miles driven in which drivers had Autopilot engaged. For those driving without Autopilot but with our active safety features, we registered one accident for every 2.05 million miles driven. For those driving without Autopilot and without our active safety features, we registered one accident for every 1.27 million miles driven. By comparison, NHTSA’s most recent data shows that in the United States there is an automobile crash every 484,000 miles.”

Putting This In More Context

The Church of Automotive Safety is all over Tesla right now. Safety advocates on the payroll of Tesla’s competitors, mainstream media, and some government officials have started making a big fuss about Tesla vehicles in the last couple of weeks.

In one recent teapot tempest, the IIHS slammed Advanced Driver Assistance Features (ADAS) for supposedly causing a 10% greater risk of fatal crash, but relied on faulty assumptions to do so. You can see the full details here, but in sum, they assumed that speed limits were a good standard by which to judge safety, despite the fact that speed limits are often set by politics and Helen Lovejoy instead of based on scientific principles.

In another article, I challenge the NTSB’s assertion that Tesla’s FSD Beta and Autopilot are “potentially dangerous.” They’re calling for stricter regulation without providing any real proof of a problem. The most damning thing is that the FSD Beta has been going for months and there have been no accidents.

It makes sense for Tesla to work harder to get their side of things out there so that potential buyers can see something other than what The Church is trying to smear the company with. Tesla has had to deal with an unusual flow of FUD for over a decade, and is used to this, but many know that things have to be dealt with.

Why All The FUD Lately?

At this point, I’m going to probably sound like a conspiracy theorist, but I’m not paranoid. The establishment really is out to get Tesla.

At the political level, I think the issue is that Tesla makes the government look bad. Government officials want us to think they’re going to solve the world’s major problems, like climate change. Despite their best efforts, the status quo kept prevailing. Then, some upstart that wasn’t elected comes along and actually gets people to want electric vehicles. Not only that, but Elon Musk doesn’t agree with them on everything, sometimes loudly disagreeing with them on things like coronavirus policy.

Politicians are often full of themselves, regardless of what party they’re in. Political office attracts that kind of personality. Someone like Elon Musk enrages people with that personality type, especially when he doesn’t toe the line. Partisan hacks, running on tribal instinct, follow along and want to punish Elon for his independent streak. You see media and activists on all sides parroting the talking points for that reason. Republicans attack him because they like the oil industry, and Democrats attack him because he’s actually getting stuff done that they would rather be taking credit for.

At the industry level, many safety organizations are funded by Tesla’s competitors. It should be no surprise that they carry water for the people writing the checks and feel free to attack those not paying the bills, or feel encouraged to do so.

Am I carrying water for Elon Musk? Definitely, but I don’t own any Tesla stock and I don’t ever get a dime from them. I don’t even own a Tesla. I do this because I don’t think it’s fair for the smear campaign to continue without someone trying to counter it. I hope our readers will step up and help, too.

One thing we can do is share the safety page on social media.

It’s time to collaborate on climate and economic justice solutions

Avatar

Published

on

Air pollution has grave consequences — the World Health Organization estimates it kills 7 million people a year. Indeed, recent research suggests closer to 9 million people died from exposure to air pollution caused by burning fossil fuel each year from 2012 to 2018. The economic impacts on health and productivity from exposure to air pollution add up to trillions of dollars. On top of that is the profound, existential threat of climate change.

These consequences are not evenly distributed. In the United States, Black Americans are three times more likely to die from air pollution. In California, about 44 percent of Latinos live with poor air quality, compared to 25 percent of non-Latinos. Climate change impacts including extreme heat and flooding also disproportionately affect people of color.

It’s U.S. Climate Action Week, and statistics such as these underscore the lived experiences of millions of people, and the urgent need for immediate, collective action.

Governments are mobilizing to address equity and the environment

Thanks to the groundbreaking work of environmental justice leaders across the country, governments are taking bold climate action that addresses these disproportionate impacts. New legislation in states such as California, New York and New Jersey is focused on addressing environmental injustices through data-driven planning and targeted interventions.

And now, the Biden administration has set the goal that 40 percent of federal climate investments benefit disadvantaged communities. Justice40 is an opportunity to systemically address environmental justice and unlock a new wave of economy-growing innovation in historically underinvested communities across the nation.

Businesses can be growth engines for economic and climate justice

With all levels of government mobilizing to invest in environmental justice, it’s time for the private sector to step up, too. Businesses play a critical role in addressing the converging crises of climate change, public health and widening economic disparities.

It’s not just about reducing or even reversing individual corporate carbon footprints. It’s about redesigning the way we do business to solve for public good and economic growth at the same time. Products and services should be designed for and with communities. Business models can serve shareholders and stakeholders simultaneously.

Too much of the technological innovation in recent decades has been designed in a Silicon Valley bubble and centered on convenience, comfort and status.

Already, environmental and climate justice entrepreneurs are paving the way. For example:

  • Donnel Baird, founder of BlocPower, partners with governments, utilities, building owners and community members to generate energy bill savings and reduced carbon emissions. BlocPower’s smart buildings platform markets, engineers and finances renewable energy and energy-efficiency technologies to buildings in underserved market segments, generating financial returns, reducing emissions and improving public health.
  • Elango Thevar, founder and CEO of NEER.ai, is bringing a next-generation intelligent platform for water infrastructure to smaller communities to ensure access to clean water for all.
  • Dana Clare Redden, founder and CEO of Solar Stewards, is building a more inclusive clean energy economy through on-site solar development with community organizations such as affordable housing, schools and nonprofits.

A common thread for each company is that they are designing solutions for and with communities underserved by the technology industry.

Building climate solutions and economic growth for and with communities

Environmental justice organizations have been tapping into their own ingenuity to create innovative climate solutions for decades. Yet, the technology industry has, by and large, ignored the incredible opportunity to partner with them to innovate scalable solutions that serve climate and economic justice at the same time.

Too much of the technological innovation in recent decades has been designed in a Silicon Valley bubble and centered on convenience, comfort and status. But incredible advancements such as cloud computing, broadband mobile connectivity, machine learning and advanced sensing technology also have been combined to treat disease, fight wildfires, grow drought-tolerant crops and support data-driven climate action. We’ve barely scratched the surface of technology’s potential to serve people and the planet. At this defining moment, it’s time to expand the innovation economy to all communities.

By building community-centric innovation through direct partnership with and employment of people affected by environmental injustice, companies can prime their products and services to catalyze local climate action and economic growth at the same time.

For example, Aclima designed its environmental intelligence platform with and for communities to help target investments in community-led emissions reductions. And our company’s sensor network is operated by full-time employees with benefits hired from the communities it serves. To further deepen the company’s alignment and collaboration with climate and environmental justice leaders, Aclima recently expanded the Aclima Advisory Board to ensure the science and technology it develops is continuously attuned to the needs of the communities and customers it serves.

Climate entrepreneurs and the technology industry as a whole constantly must evolve their approaches and iterate their solutions based on feedback from trusted relationships with community partners and stakeholders. We can go further by designing business models to support public good and drive economic opportunity for people who have been left out of the innovation economy that has created unprecedented levels of wealth. Communities affected by environmental injustice have been ignored for far too long, but they have the power to propel all of us forward.

It’s time for the private sector to transform into a growth engine for both economic and climate justice. To ensure equal access to self-determination and to economic opportunity, we must secure everyone’s right to a healthy environment.

Going Green: 6 Reasons to Use Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products in Your Office

Avatar

Published

on

Cleanliness is a workplace must-have. Otherwise, it compromises the employees’ health and well-being. It also hinders them from being productive.

However, many cleaning practices can hurt the environment. No wonder green cleaning is increasing in popularity.

If you are considering practicing eco-friendly cleaning in your office, here are six reasons you should join the bandwagon:

1. It improves air quality

Contrary to what people believe, indoor air can be more polluted than outside of their current establishment. One reason that may be is because of the cleaning products that you use to clean your place, like your office.

Many commercially available cleaning products have chemicals that are harmful to our health in more ways than one. That’s why even though you are indoors and you should be protected from the contaminated air outside, you are still not safe.

However, if you take the time to use eco-friendly cleaning products, you will avoid this issue.

When green cleaning products evaporate into the air and inhale them, they will not negatively affect your health.

2. Healthier work environment

One benefit that you get from green cleaning is a healthier work environment. And for us at Maid Sailors Maid Service Jersey City, we believe that a healthy work environment is a productive workplace.

Health and well-being are common workplace productivity issues. Thus, it is in your best interest to create a healthy work environment.

Unlike conventional cleaning products, you will not have to worry about chemicals that can harm everyone in the office. As such, you are reducing chemical-induced accidents. You are also decreasing adverse physiological reactions brought by inhaling commercial cleaning products.

You will find that your employees will be getting sick less, and if you clean often, you will prevent illness from spreading faster. Plus, you know that you are not harming the environment. That’s because you are not using chemical-laden cleaning products.

3. Employee comfort

If you own a business, one of your jobs is to ensure the comfort of your employees. Because if they are comfortable, they can work with ease. And this can translate to an increase in productivity.

Comfort is not only about the aesthetics of the place, but it is certainly something to consider. Speaking of comfort, another thing that will help your workplace be more comfortable is the cleaning products you use.

When you use chemical-laden cleaning products to clean your office, it can affect people in different ways. Many of the traditional cleaning products that we use all the time are linked to all sorts of health issues ranging in severity. For some people, it can go to a full-blown asthma attack or allergic reaction, while others will get skin irritation.

Your employees afflicted with this might not even be aware that it is because of the cleaning products you used in the office. For the sake of your employees’ comfort and safety, you should stick to eco-friendly cleaning products. That’s because they are less likely to cause adverse health issues.

When your employees are comfortable and safe inside the office, they are more productive and can produce quality work.

4. Cost-effective cleaning products

Another aspect of using sustainable cleaning products in your office is that it is much more affordable.

However, green cleaning methods are often pushed back. That’s because there is a misconception that eco-friendly cleaning products are expensive.

What you do not know is that you can create such cleaning products using the items that are already in your pantry. Some excellent examples are vinegar, baking soda, and lemon.

Moreover, manufacturers are making affordable green cleaning products due to the increasing demand. At most, a cleaning product in the grocery should cost the same as the leading, chemical-laden brand.

And even if green cleaning products, you can consider them as a long-term investment. After all, you are helping improve your employee’s well-being. As a result, they become extra productive, which can impact your business’s bottom line.

Mind you, a box of baking soda and a bottle of vinegar can go a long way. What’s important is that you know how to maximize and use them properly. That way, you save on money and resources and reduce your overhead cost to compensate whenever an employee takes sick leave.

5. Improve employee attendance

During the flu season, attendance in the workplace is likely to decrease a concerning amount. That said, you should ensure workplace hygiene.

We are talking about maintaining workplace cleanliness. Another is to ensure that employees practice personal hygiene. That way, you can prioritize employee health, reduce sick leaves, and boost office productivity.

When you improve your office attendance by creating a safe and clean environment, your office will be more productive. You can also reduce operating costs.

Since your employees will take fewer sick leaves, you and your employees will achieve more goals and please more clients.

6. Your employees deserve it

Your employees deserve to work in an eco-friendly and sustainable environment, especially if it is one of your business values.

When they work in an eco-conscious place, it can motivate them to work harder. It can even inspire them to make the same changes in their homes.

Eco-friendly cleaning products are a small change yet the impactful thing that you can do.

As mentioned earlier, green cleaning products do not contain harmful chemicals that compromise employee health and safety. As such, you are reducing the risk of office accidents and the number of sick leaves. Meanwhile, you get to save money since there is no employee to be hospitalized.

But the most important result of eco-friendly cleaning is that you are doing your part in saving the environment. And who would not want that?

Conclusion

Eco-friendly and sustainable cleaning products can help you have a healthy and productive workplace. That’s because you are ensuring your employees’ health, safety, and productivity.

And as mentioned earlier, a healthy workplace is a productive workplace.

That said, doing your part in saving the environment can also help you increase your business’s bottom line. And that is what we call a win-win situation.

Can Renewable Energy Reduce Pesticides?

Avatar

Published

on

Renewable energy is in high demand. With fossil fuels and human activity depleting the planet, more and more people are switching to renewables to be more sustainable and save the planet.

One use of renewable energy that has increased over the years has been on farms. Farmers are integrating solar panels with their crops, known as agrivoltaics. They then use the energy from the panels to run their farm, and the crops easily grow beneath the panels.

Another way that the agricultural sector has embraced renewable energy is by eliminating the need for fossil fuels and reducing pesticide use at the same time. As the agricultural community continues to embrace these methods, fossil fuels could become a thing of the past.

Fossil Fuels Used for More Than Transportation Fuel

When people think of fossil fuels, the first thing that likely comes to mind is transportation fuel. Many vehicles on the roads today still rely on fossil fuels to operate. Besides using fossil fuels for most transportation vehicles, they’re used in processes to make items like paints, plastics, detergents and pesticides.

Already, pesticides are harming the environment if not used properly. Although they are not the worst option, they have damaged the ecosystems around them in numerous ways, such as polluting water sources, decreasing biodiversity and contributing to climate change.

In the process, the industries creating pesticides break the hydrocarbon bonds present in oils and natural gases. Once the process breaks the bonds into simpler compounds, they are reassembled into other molecules to make pesticides.

Additionally, there needs to be something that fuels the machines for this process, which is also fossil fuels. The question remains — can renewable energy reduce pesticides, then? If industries switch to renewable energy, would that mean that pesticides could no longer be produced?

Well, not technically. Scientists have found a way to use renewable energy for the same process. Renewable energy can split up molecules found naturally, like carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen and water and then put those chemical molecules back together to continue to create products like pesticides.

It would be challenging for people in the agricultural industry and other sectors to give up their products made from fossil fuels altogether. Plus, the process still is not economically viable. Even though the reduction of pesticides likely won’t occur, this will reduce the need for fossil fuels, and therefore increasing renewable energy, which is much healthier for the environment.

An Increase in Solar Means a Decrease in Pesticides

There is a way, though, that renewable energy has reduced the use of pesticides. Andhra Pradesh, an agricultural center located in southern India, experiences many pests on their crops every year. The pests come in swarms and end up ruining valuable crops.

Pesticides no longer were working to solve the pest problem. Plus, when farmers did use pesticides, many pesticide-resistant insects ended up overtaking crops. One of those pests is the red-headed hairy caterpillar, which eventually turns into a moth.

Moths are naturally attracted to light, so farmers and innovators decided to use lights to attract the moths. Once drawn, they fall into a tub containing water and an additive that kills them, which doesn’t give them a chance to lay eggs in the crops.

However, power grids failed during heavier storms, and the issues with the moths didn’t entirely resolve. Instead of relying on the grid for electricity, farmers installed solar-powered lanterns, which proved to be much more effective. This method works with other pests as well, eliminating the need for pesticides that weren’t doing their job in the first place.

Reducing Pesticides With Renewable Energy

As the farming industry continues to use renewable energy and other integrated pest management, the need for pesticides will drastically reduce. This will create a more sustainable industry as well as providing hope for future generations of agricultural workers.
