Team Heretics lose on Haven for the first time at VCT Challengers

Date:

The European VALORANT Champions Tour event has its Semi Finals teams set for competition on April 8. Opportunist joined that field, beating Team Heretics 2-1 to advance to the next tournament stage at the VCT Stage 2 Challengers 1 event. In their journey to face Fun Plus Phoenix in the Semi Finals, Opportunists ended Team Heretics’ 27 win streak on Haven. The series was full of firsts as Christian “lowel” Garcia Antoran, a Sage main, played Phoenix for the first time.

Opportunist defeat Team Heretics

The recently-orgless team beat Team Heretics in a surprising series. This is the first series the teams have played in an official setting. The first curveball thrown in this series were the map picks. Team Heretics had a 27-match win streak on Haven before the series, so when the map slipped through bans it looked as if they almost had a free win. Opportunists came into the match with an aggressive composition on Split.

The team ran two Duelists and the newest agent, Astra. Team Heretics ultimately won the matchup convincingly, 13-8. They took both pistol rounds as Žygimantas “nukkye” Chmieliauskas topped the scoreboard on Raze with 22 kills. This forced a series deciding game on Haven that conventional wisdom said Team Heretics would take to end the series 2-0.

But Opportunists went with another aggressive composition–two Duelists again–and took the map 13-8. They went into the half up 7-5, won the pistol round and snowballed their economy into a Haven win. Then on Ascent, lowel pulled out Phoenix. The Spanish in-game leader has played Sage almost exclusively to this point, logging 11 maps on Sova in comparison to his 80 on Sage. The surprising pick did not dissuade Opportunists as the French side took the map 13-7.

They again took both pistol rounds and Jonathan “TakaS” Paupard popped off on Jett. He finished the map with 26 kills and a 334 Average Combat Score to knock Team Heretics out of the event.

The rest of the Semi Final field at VCT Stage 2 Challengers 1

Fun Plus Phoenix continues to stay at the top of the European VALORANT scene as it breezes past Vitality to a Semi Finals spot. The team took down the young squad 2-0 in dominant fashion. Vitality put up a fight on Split, on losing 9-13, but fell flat on Haven 1-13 to be knocked out of the tournament. The other two Semi Finals squads that locked in their spots yesterday were Ninjas in Pajamas and Guild Esports. NiP defeated Masters 1 champions Acend 2-1 despite some injury concerns from the team’s captain. Guild took out Alliance in a 2-0 sweep to advance in the tournament.

The VCT Stage 2 Challengers 1 tournament continues tomorrow, April 8, with the Semi Finals matchups and then culminates in the Grand Finals the next day, April 9.
