Elden Ring is a massive iteration on what FromSoftware began with the Souls series, bringing its relentlessly challenging combat to an incredible open world that gives us the freedom to choose our own path.
If Elden Ring wasn't already hard enough, reviewing the next FromSoftware game prior to launch and under the usual restrictions multiplies that difficulty by at least a factor of 10. So, as the embargo holding back our thoughts lifts, we can report we haven't been able to finish the game. Elden Ring is incredibly complex, with many facets to explore and things to do. We're not about to do the latest FromSoftware title a disservice and award it a final score before rolling credits, so this review in progress covers our first 40 hours with the game.
What we can confirm is FromSoftware has successfully translated the Dark Souls formula to an open world setting. The Japanese developer hasn't let up on its commitment to difficulty in the slightest, but now you have the freedom to source that masochism from almost anywhere on the sprawling map of The Lands Between. A surprising amount of the world is open right from the off, allowing you to either take the main path or ride off into the sunset in any direction you see fit.
Believe it or not, but we are three days and some change away from at last playing Elden Ring. The highly anticipated game by FromSoftware has ruled the headlines for months now, and this week is when you will finally have the game in your hands. Unless you already have it and are spoiling things, that is. On that note, this is something that’s happened. With games as ambiguous as FromSoftware releases, Elden Ring spoilers may not be too worrisome. For the most part, it’s believed that most of the game’s lore will be hidden away, much like that in Dark Souls and Bloodborne. However, no one wants to see any of those boss battles.
