Steam Next Fest to Bring Free Demos from Upcoming VR Games, Starting June 16th

Published

on

Steam Next Fest, the newly renamed Steam Game Festival, is starting its week-long PC gaming celebration on June 16th, bringing along with it free demos from upcoming VR titles, developer livestreams, and Q&As.

As part of Steam Next Fest announcement earlier this month, Valve threw out a video showing off the playable VR demos coming to the week-long festival, naming five games and promising “so many more.”

Here’s the list of those five mentioned in the video. We also linked that below so you can get a peek at each game in action:

If this month’s Steam Next Fest is anything like the Game Festival back in February, we’re expecting to see many more VR game demos, as earlier this year the platform attracted around 20 titles. We haven’t seen the full list of participating games, but we’ll sure to keep you updated as they’re revealed.

If you want to get a jump start on at least one of the VR games on offer, Against already has a free demo, which features a single level of its gritty rhythm-based, neo-noir bad-guy-punching goodness.

Outside of PC VR games, Steam Next Fest is also hosting demos across a number of PC genres including adventure games, RPGs, puzzles, platformers, and strategy games.

The week will also play host to developer chats, live streams, and include new info on upcoming games. Valve calls the format “an opportunity to get early feedback from players and build an audience for a future launch on Steam.”

Steam Next Fest goes from June 16th to June 22nd. You can sign up for an official reminder here, which can send you either an email or push notification from the Steam mobile app.

‘Valheim’ VR Mod Boosts Immersion with Addition of Motion Controller Support

Published

on

Valheim, the popular Viking-themed survival game for PC, doesn’t natively include VR support, but that won’t stop you from experiencing the vastness of its charming fantasy world from inside a VR headset. Now, one of the most accomplished teams working to add unofficial VR support to the game has updated their mod to let you finally interact with the world using your own two hands.

Initially released in February by Brandon Mousseau, not only does the mod let you play in VR in the first-person, but also now includes inverse kinematics for articulated upper body and finger animations, and a full assortment of things you can do with motion controllers. You can now do things like engage in melee combat via swinging and punching, naturally shooting a bow and arrow, holding up your shield, throwing spears, and fishing.

There are some things that haven’t changed because of the obstinately flatscreen nature of the game, such as some point-and-click interactions like building, gathering supplies, and interacting with menus. The mod however does now include custom controls for switching and equipping items via a more accessible quick menu, and holstering and unholstering weapons, which is a big step in making it feel more like a VR native.

Check out this video from YouTuber ‘Gamertag VR’ to see the mod in action:

There are still a few caveats to the Valheim VR mod. At the time of this writing, all multiplayer users must have the mod installed, otherwise those non-VR player may see some odd behavior such as missing upper-body and hand animations. Mod developer Brandon Mousseau also says full room-scale tracking is still in the works, as all locomotion is still based on joystick movement only.

If you want to play Valheim in VR, you’ll need a few things outside of a SteamVR-compatible VR headset, VR-ready PC, and a legit copy of the game. You’ll also need to download the BepInExPack installer to inject custom code, and the VHVR mod hosted over at NexusMods.

If you’ve never installed a mod for Valheim, Mousseau also created a handy step-by-step installation guide. You’ll find everything you need there.

Thanks goes out to Twitter user OXIOXI for the tip.

Firewatch VR Mod In The Works

Published

on

An unofficial Firewatch VR mod is in the works.

Developer elliotttate teased work on the mod with some GIFs and videos on UploadVR’s Discord channel last week.

Firewatch VR Mod In The Works

Firewatch is a story-driven adventure and the debut game from Campo Santo, the studio that went on to be acquired by Valve and worked on Half-Life: Alyx. The game follows Henry, who spends a summer living in a lookout tower at Shoshone National Forest. As Henry reckons with personal trauma his connection to someone in another lookout draws him closer into a mystery.

Firewatch’s narrative-first approach won it a lot of fans when it first launched in 2016, and many think that its gorgeous setting and pacing would make for a great VR port. In fact, we’re a little surprised that it isn’t hasn’t had official integration all these years on. That said, artist Jane Nh did bring the game’s most iconic location to Valve’s Destinations app five years ago.

These GIFs confirm that the mod will have motion controller support, including being able to point at items with your hand, grab them from afar and then physically hold them. It’s being modded directly in-engine to hopefully make for a native-feeling experience. That’s about all the details we have for now, but we should be able to bring you more as the mod gets closer to launch (which, again, we don’t have a window for just yet).

Check out a more in-depth look at gameplay below, even showing the player holding a map and compass at the same time:

Will you be trying out the Firewatch VR mod? Let us know in the comments below!

VR Cover Mid-Year Sale Discounts All its Accessories

Published

on

Own an Oculus Quest 2 headset and are looking to improve your virtual reality (VR) gaming with new accessories? Then you may want to look at VR Cover’s mid-year sale which is currently running until the end of this week. VR Cover has heavily leaned into accessories for the Quest 2 since the headset launched, offering new facial interfaces, lens covers and controller grips.

VR Cover

It doesn’t matter if you head to the European, US or Worldwide stores, all the Oculus Quest 2 accessories have been discounted, with most around the 30% mark. If you’re looking for more comfort then the Facial Interface & Foam Replacement Set (in a range of colours) is down from €29.00 EUR/$29.00 USD to €20.30/$20.30. Or for those energetic VR sessions how about a Silicone Cover for €9.80/$9.80 instead of €14.00/$14.00. Find yourself smacking the walls or furniture? Then the Halo Controller Protector might be a useful addition for €10.50/$10.50 (normally €15/$15).

While there are a lot of accessories for the Oculus Quest 2, if you own another headset VR Cover does cater for other devices just not as extensively. For example, there’s the Facial Interface and Foam Replacement Set (€20.30/$20.30) and the Silicone Cover (€9.80/$9.80) for HP Reverb G2

If you own a Valve Index there’s the cotton VR Cover for $15.20 (down from $19.00) or the Interface & Foam Replacement Basic Set for $31.20 (normally $39.00). The same goes for Oculus Rift S with the cotton VR Cover retailing for $13.30 instead of $19, and the Silicone Cover for $8.40 (normally $14.00). So there are a few deals and saves to be had.

VR Cover

It’s worth noting that while Oculus does sell its own accessories via its website including VR Cover’s very own Facial Interface & Foam Replacement Set, there are no offers on currently. So it’s best to go direct to source.

The VR Cover mid-year sale runs until 26th June (11.59pm EDT). For Quest 2 owners, if you happen to spend over €50/$50 then add a Silicone Cover for Oculus Quest 2 to your cart, you’ll get it for free. For all the latest VR deals and savings, keep reading VRFocus.

Exhibits and experiments that are music to your ears

And while you transform your melodies, you can also check out some fun facts about each maestro or dive deeper into the rich music-themed stories and online exhibitions our newest partners are also launching today on Google Arts & Culture.

MILA, a French association fostering the local scene, steps into the stories of a true Parisian gem, the “Rue de la Musique” – the street of music. Nestled in Paris’ Montmartre district, independent music makers, record labels and record shops have transformed an entire neighborhood into an effervescent music scene. One example: Record Makers, one of the most influential French Touch labels, settled in an old bakery where French pop legend Joe Dassin used to buy his croissants.

In Pune, India, the Baithak Foundation publishes its collection of rare archival interviews and recordings of Indian classical music. They’re also launching new stories about Indian ragas and the correct time to sing them, and exhibits on maestros like Pandit Vijay Sardeshmukh or Ustad Amir Khan, founder of Indore gharana.
